PENALTIES AND FAIR USE

The penalty sometimes depends on the severity of the infringement.

Any person who violates can be imprisoned and be fined a certain amount. If the case is not so big for example, you forgot to quote the source in a term paper, they will not be going after you due to the fact that they have bigger cases to worry about. This still means students need to be taught to do the correct thing.

Fair use means that brief excerpts of copyright should be quoted. This includes news reporting, teaching, and research. Sometimes there is no need for permission or payment to the copyright holder.

Under fair use you can use quotations or excerpts, where it has been available to the public. It is always important to mention the name of the material along with the author.

THE USE OF WORDS, MUSICAL SCORE, AND MULTIMEDIA

Keep in mind since it is not your work then you can’t use it any way you want. Also, adding or removing words to something doesn’t automatically make it yours. Whenever you use other someone’s words make sure you give them the proper acknowledgement and where you found it. If you are using someone's words in your written work, put quotation marks around the words and write beside it where it came from. You should never change someone else’s work unless you get permission. This applies to both teachers and students.

MUSICAL SCORE

 If you wish to perform a musical work you might have ask the school if they already have permission to use it. At times schools are given permission from copyright holders to use it. Keep in mind that they all have to be appropriate and used for education purpose.

MULTIMEDIA

Teachers are allowed to show images, music, and multimedia in classrooms. Since it is easier to access multimedia and since most automatically are have copyright, there is no permission required. But the law does mention that at times it is only allowed to show small clips of a movie or multimedia.

 Media should be used for education purposes or instructional activities  Teacher or student using it should provide the information about it

TV

Teachers are often finding things on T V to show to the students. Most of the things on T V are protected. Like any other resources a teacher uses in a classroom, it must be presented correctly. To record a copy of what is on T V isn’t actually okay. So the correct thing to do is possibly find clips online from the source itself or ask the school if they have licensed copy of the program. Once it is done correctly, the teacher must provide the information of the program.

PERMISSION

 A way to get permission to use certain things, you can online to ask for permission. There is a website that can help you do it or you can directly contact the author. I would double check at school to see if they have you need already. Sometimes the author or producer gives permission for schools to use.

WEBSITE

Online has become a big source of information for teachers and students. On should always consider if the information provided is reliable. The web allows a lot of people to voice their opinion, so at times the information provided isn’t always accurate. Then there is also the importance that teachers actually use websites that are for education purpose and work well with their lesson plan.

DO THE RIGHT THING!

 It is very hard to know these days what is appropriate to show in a classroom and how to go about it the right way. There is so many different amazing resources for teachers on the internet but it is important to give credit to the people who are putting up there. From quoting the author to providing a work cited for the students, it is very important for students to see an example. Then when it comes to multimedia, always double check with the school if permission has already been given and if not it is always possible to ask for permission. It is always better to be safe then sorry!
