By 1400s, Byzantine empire is falling
Ottomans = a nomadic group, speak
Turkish, migrate from central Asia to
Asia minor & the Balkans
1453 = Ottoman armies surround
Constantinople

After battling for 2 months, Ottomans win
and rename the city ISTANBUL
Geographic Expansion

Post 1453: empire reaches to Mecca,
Nile River, into the Balkans & Russia,
get to Vienna in 1529
