1. What would the vision for a Future Earth
interface/node in Asia-Pacific be?
• An open network of people not limited to
Academies
• Challenge is in the coordination
• Engagement of the right people
• Need support from the higher political level
• Flexible approach in looking for diverse partners
• Transparent
• Minimalist approach and effective
communication
• Opportunity for young scientists involvement
2. What should the regional interface/node of Future
Earth look like?
• Asia – Pacific region
• Virtual network - web based -Facebook /

– Minimal bureaucracy
– National contact point
• Leverage on existing regional network like APN;
APEC; START; ASEAN; ADB; GEOSS; UNESCO;
UNU; CGIAR; WHO; UNISDR; MAIRS; UNITAR on
who can contribute list of experts to Future Earth

GEOSS; UNESCO; UNU; CGIAR; WHO; UNISDR;
MAIRS; UNITAR
4. Where do we start? Who is ”we”?
5. What are the next steps?
• Next step
– Determine more complete regional participation list
– Strengthening Asia’s perspective (research challenges
and representation)
– Is Regional secretariat needed immediately?
– Integrating Future Earth into the national funding
programme is a challenge because each national
programme has its own agenda
– Challenge is to communicate Future Earth (beyond
Ministry of Environment) as a ground breaking
initiative in line with countries’ strategy in global
change research
6. How would we fund it?
• Funding is not the biggest problem, regional
implementation is
• Suggest to tap into global private climate
finance. For example engage with CSR
movement

• Need a country specific strategy
