What does it all Mean?
Substance, element,
compound, solution – what
are they and how can I tell
them apart?
Here is what they mean
• Substance – any matter with a fixed
composition that can not be physically
broken down. (elements and compounds)
• Element – matter made of only 1 type of
atom (on periodic table)
• Compound – matter made of 2 or more
atoms stuck together – like water H2O
• Mixture – Not a pure substance- can be
physically separated.
Here is a brain map

Types of mixtures
Heterogeneous – substances are NOT evenly
mixed. Salt and pepper
Homogeneous – substances are evenly mixed
at the molecular level (but not bonded)
Shampoo, Kool-Aid, brass

Homogeneous = SOLUTION
Terms for solutions
Solute- what seems to dissolve (disappear)
Solvent- The substance that dissolves the
solute.
Salt + water = salt water
Solute + solvent = solution
Zinc + Copper = brass
oxygen + nitrogen = air
Types of solutions
Liquid Solutions –
Gas solutions
