Gasunie is one of the biggest gas infrastructure

give safety the highest priority; it forms the
basis of our license to operate. We abide by the
strictest safety, health and environmental
standards, both for our own employees and for
our external contractors. Gasunie’s safety policy
is thus characterised by a proactive approach
which is designed to prevent accidents,
incidents and hazardous situations.

General rules
• Familiarise yourself with the situation at the installation or construction site where you are going
to work as soon as possible

Make sure you know who and what is where
Apply precautionary measures that are appropriate to the work you are going to carry out
Make enough time for safety: think about what could go wrong and consider whether you have
done everything you can to prevent any risky conditions
Remain alert at all times when you are working.
If in any doubt, always ask or suspend activities where necessary.
The 10 golden rules of safety
These rules apply to everyone in the company, including temporary hire staff and contractors’
personnel. The purpose of these rules is to further improve risk and safety awareness throughout
the company as a whole. These are not new rules, but indicate where Gasunie wants to place the
emphasis.
1. Carry out excavation work safely
2. Make sure that a closed room can be safely accessed
3. Work safely at heights (> 2.5 metres)
4. Never walk or work under a hoisting load
5. Drive safely
6. Make sure you have a full and valid work permit/license to work
7. Make sure you only work on equipment that has been made secure
8. Use the prescribed personal protection equipment (PPE)
9. You are prohibited from working under the influence of alcohol or drugs
10.Do not smoke outside designated smoking areas

Follow the KLIC procedure during excavation work
Only carry out excavation work following coordination with the project manager
Dig test trenches if necessary
Make sure a closed room can be safely accessed

Always position a designated safety monitor outside the entrance
Take regular measurements of the oxygen concentration present
Ensure suitable rescue, protection and communications equipment

Abide by the traffic regulations, including at installations
Start any journey well rested and take a break from driving if you are tired
Make sure your load isn’t dangerous
Always remain fully alert when you are driving
Never make or answer calls while driving, unless you are doing it to prevent
an (impending) accident

Adapt your driving style to changing circumstances (fog, low sunlight, ice)

Clearly outline the work that has to be done
Identify the risks involved and discuss the appropriate measures
Check that the workplace is safe, including when extending / reducing
the length of work permits

Make allowances for other work that may be going on in the area

A designated person should make the process or equipment safe and check
that it continues to be so (product-free and voltage-free)
