Experiencing the Person,
Purpose, Provision, and Power of
PART 8
Romans 12
Spiritual Gifts
1 Therefore
I urge you, brothers, by the mercies
of God, to present your bodies a living and holy
sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your
spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed
by the renewing of your mind, so that you may
prove what the will of God is, that which is
good and acceptable and perfect.
(Romans 12:1-2)
Spiritual Gifts
3 For
through the grace given to me I say to
everyone among you not to think more highly
of himself than he ought to think; but to think
so as to have sound judgment, as God has
allotted to each a measure of faith. 4 For just as
we have many members in one body and all
the members do not have the same function,
5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ,
and individually members one of another.
(Romans 12:3-5)
Spiritual Gifts
6 Since
we have gifts that differ according to the
grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them
accordingly: if prophecy, according to the
proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his
serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or
he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who
gives, with liberality; he who leads, with
diligence; he who shows mercy, with
cheerfulness. (Romans 12:6-8)
The Gift of Giving
8 …he
who gives, [do so] with liberality…
(Romans 12:8)
The Gift of Giving
He who steals must steal no longer; but rather
he must labor, performing with his own hands
what is good, so that he will have something to
share with one who has need. (Ephesians 4:28)
The Gift of Giving
1 Now,
brothers, we wish to make known to you the
grace of God which has been given in the churches
of Macedonia, 2 that in a great ordeal of affliction
their abundance of joy and their deep poverty
overflowed in the wealth of their generosity. 3 For I
testify that according to their ability, and beyond
their ability, they gave of their own accord, 4 begging
us with much urging for the favor of participation in
the support of the saints, 5 and this, not as we had
expected, but they first gave themselves to the Lord
and to us by the will of God. (2 Corinthians 8:1-5)
The Gift of Giving
•
36 Thus
Joseph, who was also called by the
apostles Barnabas (which means son of
encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,
37 sold a field that belonged to him and
brought the money and laid it at the apostles’
feet. (Acts 4:36-37)
• In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha,
which is translated Dorcas. She was always
doing good works and acts of charity.
(Acts 9:36)
The Gift of Giving
…he who gives, with liberality… (Romans 12:8)
The Gift of Giving
6 Remember
this: Whoever sows sparingly will
also reap sparingly, and whoever sows
generously will also reap generously. 7 Each
man should give what he has decided in his
heart to give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to make all grace abound to
you, so that in all things at all times, having all
that you need, you will abound in every good
work (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)
The Gift of Giving
The Gift of Leading
… he who leads [proistêmi], with diligence…
(Romans 12:8)
The Gift of Leading
1 This
saying is trustworthy: “If anyone aspires to be
an overseer, he desires a noble work.” 2 An
overseer, therefore, must be above reproach, the
husband of one wife, self-controlled, sensible,
respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not addicted
to wine, not a bully but gentle, not quarrelsome, not
greedy— 4 one who manages [proistêmi] his own
household competently, having his children under
control with all dignity. 5 (If anyone does not know
how to manage [proistêmi] his own household, how
will he take care of God’s church?)
(1 Timothy 3:1-5, HCSB)
The Gift of Leading
• Deacons must be faithful husbands, managing
[proistêmi] their children and their own
households competently. (1 Timothy 3:12)
•
12 Now
we ask you, brothers, to appreciate
those who labor among you and lead
[proistêmi] you in the Lord and admonish you,
13 and to regard them very highly in love
because of their work. Be at peace among
yourselves. (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13)
The Gift of Leading
• he who leads, [do so] with diligence...
(Romans 12:8)
The Gift of Mercy
6 Since
we have gifts that differ according to the
grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them
accordingly: if prophecy, according to the
proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his
serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;
8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who
gives, with liberality; he who leads, with
diligence; he who shows mercy, with
cheerfulness. (Romans 12:6-8)
The Gift of Mercy
37 “‘Lord,
when did we see You hungry, and
feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to
drink? 38 And when did we see You a stranger,
and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You?
39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and
come to You?’ 40…‘Truly I say to you, to the
extent that you did it to one of these brothers
of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to
Me.’” (Matthew 25:37-40)
The Gift of Mercy
3 Praise
be to the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the
God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our
troubles, so that we can comfort those in any
trouble with the comfort we ourselves have
received from God. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
The Gift of Mercy
• “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall
receive mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)
• When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd,
and felt compassion for them and healed
their sick. (Matthew 14:14)
The Gift of Mercy
• …he who shows mercy, [do so] with
cheerfulness. (Romans 12:8).
• “A pleasing countenance in acts of mercy is a
great relief and comfort to the miserable;
when they see it is not done grudgingly or
unwillingly, but with pleasant looks and
gentle words, and all possible indications of
eagerness.” – Matthew Henry
• Serve the Lord with gladness… (Psalm 100:2)
Jesus and the Gifts
• …He will glorify Me (John 16:14)
• For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your
sake He became poor so that you through His
poverty might become rich.
(2 Corinthians 8:9)
Jesus and the Gifts
• “But I tell you the truth, it is to your
advantage that I go away; for if I do not go
away, the Helper will not come to you; but if
I go, I will send Him to you.” (John 16:7)
Jesus and the Gifts
10 As
each one has received a special gift, employ
it in serving one another as good stewards of the
manifold grace of God. 11 Whoever speaks, is to
do so as one who is speaking the utterances of
God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is
serving by the strength which God supplies; so
that in all things God may be glorified through
Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and
dominion forever and ever. Amen.
