• • • ROMANS 9 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel. 7 “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— 12 she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY IN SALVATION • • • God elects/chooses/predestines those who will be saved God does not elect/choose/predestine everyone to be saved.

God elects/chooses/predestines those who will be saved unconditionally – not based on their heritage or on what they do

GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY IN SALVATION • • • • Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, prophets John 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

1 Peter 2:8 They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

ROMANS 9:14-18

• 14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

Genesis 18:25 Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” Jeremiah 9:23 Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.”

GOD’S REVELATION ABOUT HIMSELF • • • • God is the creator & sustainer of the universe and we are creatures accountable to Him.

God is sovereign. Everything happens according to His will.

God is perfect. Perfect in knowledge, wisdom, power, presence, faithfulness, goodness, justice, mercy, grace, love, and holiness. Therefore, he is perfect in his choices. God’s ultimate purpose is His glory.

GOD’S NAME

• • • Exodus 33:18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. God’s name is grace and mercy!

God glorifies Himself by proclaiming His name!

GOD’S NAME

• • • Exodus 9:15 For by now I could have put out my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth. 16 But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that

my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.

17 You are still exalting yourself against my people and will not let them go. God’s name is power and justice!

God glorifies Himself by proclaiming His name!

ALL PEOPLE WITHOUT MERCY • • • • • • Romans 3:10“None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death We all deserve condemnation Fair would be hell for all of us Justice would be eternal damnation for all of us

GOD’S MERCY & GRACE

Romans 3:24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus Romans 6:23 but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. God is not obligated to show mercy & grace to those who deserve just condemnation

PRINCIPLES

• • • • God’s ultimate purpose in all that He wills is to glorify Himself by proclaiming His name: mercy, grace, power, justice, sovereign, holy!

He glorifies Himself by showing mercy & grace to those who do not deserve it – the elect He glorifies Himself by dispensing justice to those who deserve it – the reprobate We are all responsible for our choices

APPLICATIONS

• Beg for mercy and not what you deserve. Luke 18:13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
