LET THE GAME BEGIN!
Introduction
• American Football is one of the most competitive sports in the world.
• The sport is mainly popular in the United States. It is the most watched sport in
the country.
• Football is one of the most violent sports. The ball moves down the field by
running or throwing it until the opposing team tackles, or brings the player with
the ball to the ground.
• Football is a team sport. There are eleven players on offense and eleven
players on defense. There is also a special team which has eleven players. This
means that teamwork and general team talent is the most important aspect
of the game.
History
• Football was formed in the late 1800’s at college
campuses, or universities.
• The sport has roots in the English sport known as
Rugby.
• The earliest form of football was very violent. Many
players actually died each year. Over time, new rules
were established. Although football is still a physical
sport with a lot of injuries, it is much safer today.
• The NFL was formed in 1921. It became the most
popular professional league in the United States by
the 1950's.
Players
• Quarterback – The quarterback runs the plays. He may choose to run with the ball, pass the
ball, or throw the ball to another player. He must be able to make good decisions quickly.
• Running Back – The running backs main job is to run with the ball. Sometimes they must help
protect the quarterback from the defense. He must be strong and fast to be able to get past
the defense.
• Wide Receiver – The wide receivers main job is to catch the ball when the quarterback
throws it. He must be fast to get away from the defense. He must also be able to catch a
football well.
• Kicker/Punter – The kicker, or punters main job is to kick the ball. He participates in field goals
and kickoff. He must be very accurate.
• Offensive Line – The offensive lines main job is to block, or protect the quarterback and other
players that carry the ball so their team can score points.
• Defense – The defensive players main job is to stop the other team’s offense from scoring.
These players try to sack, or tackle the quarterback and other players carrying the ball. If
they can, they may take the ball from the offense. Sometimes the defense can score
touchdowns!
Scoring
1. Touchdown (TD) – A touchdown is worth 6 points. A TD is scored when a
player catches a pass or runs with the football into the opponent’s end zone.
• Extra Point –When a team scores a touchdown they can attempt to kick
the ball through the goal posts for 1 extra point.
• Two-Point Conversion – When a team scores a touchdown they can
attempt to either throw or run the ball into the end zone for 2 extra points.
1. Field Goal – A field goal is worth 3 points. A field goal is scored when a team
kicks the ball through the goal posts.
Football Vocabulary
• End Zone - The area at the end of the football field where the offense tries to take the ball. This is where
touchdowns are scored.
• Fumble: When a player drops the ball.
• Goal Posts or Up-rights: The bright yellow bars in each end zone. The kicker kicks the ball through the
goal posts.
• Interception: A pass that is caught by a player on the defense.
• Line of scrimmage: The location on the field where the football starts for the next play to begin. This is an
imaginary line.
• Snap or “the Hike”: The snap starts the play. The football is passed to the quarterback by the center,
which is another player on offense.
Superlatives
• In English, we use superlatives to describe one thing in a
group of three or more things.
• For example:
• The quarterback is the quickest of all the offensive players.
• The running backs and the wide receivers are the fastest of all
the offensive players.
• The kicker is the most accurate of all the offensive players.
There are two ways to form superlative
adjectives in English:
1. short adjectives: add “-est“ to the end of the adjective
Example: strongest
2. long adjectives: use the word "most“ before the adjective
Example: The most popular
Short adjectives
1-syllable adjectives
strong, fast
2-syllable adjectives ending in “-y”
early, happy
Normal Rule: add “-est”
fast  fastest
Variation: if the adjective ends in “-e”, just add “-st”
late  latest
Variation: if the adjective ends in consonant, vowel, consonant,
double the last consonant
big  biggest
Variation: if the adjective ends in “-y”, change the y to i
early  earliest
Long adjectives
2-syllable adjectives not ending in “-y”
modern, pleasant
All adjectives of 3 or more syllables
competitive, popular
Variation: use “most”
competitive  the
most competitive
popular  the most
popular
