When Mission was Built
(Founded)
• The mission was founded
on July 16, 1769.This
mission was founded by
Fray Serra.
Father Junipero Serra
• Father Junipero Serra was
born on November 24,
1713. In 1737 Junipero
Serra became a priest for
12 years.
Mission Site
• San Diego de Alcala was
founded on a small hill in
San Diego.

Agriculture and Livestock
• In 1773 the mission had
40 cattle,74 sheep, 55
goats, 10 pig, 29 horses
and 28 mules. They
produced bushels of
wheat, barley, corn, peas,
lentils, garbanzos and
habas.
Indians Joining this Mission
• The name of the Indians
are the Kumeyaay Indians.
Unlike other missions, the
neophytes at San Diego
continued to reside in
traditional villages in part
due to food shortages at
the mission.
Population
• The population of this
mission was 1,829 in
1824.
Significant Events
• This mission was
destroyed in an Indian
attack in November, 1775.
