WATER
engineering a better world
According to the UN
Approximately 1.1 billion people still do not
have access to improved drinking water in
2005
By 2025, it is estimated that about two
thirds of the world's population - about
5.5 billion people - will live in areas
facing moderate to severe water stress

Supply Issues
1. RAM PUMP / HYDRAMS
• Inexpensive
• Few moving parts
• Use the waters inherent
energy
Cons: Can only be used in limited scenarios

Is that water clean?
There are many filter and
solar distillation based
technologies designed to
provide clean drinking
water to people:
1. Ceramic / Clay Filter
2. Life Straw
3. Water cone

SOME TIPS
First note down all the essence of the problem. Remember:
• You want to deliver potable water to people living on floating and
stilt buildings.
• The water level changes with the season (wet and dry)
• Where will you have everything located: floating, on a stilt, stuck to
the house, etc?
• Imagine a simplistic case involving you sitting at the top of a
buoy in the Indian ocean (maybe in the Perth harbour area or some
place you’re familiar with). How can you send water up to where you
are? The water level changes with the tides? The ocean water is
plenty but I doubt you want to drink it as it is!
SOME TIPS
• Transfer the thought process you had in the simplistic and familiar
case to the Tonle Sap area
• You don’t have to tackle both the water treatment and water supply
issues for the Challenge, you can pick one (but both would be
great). Remember to consider economic, community and
environmental impacts of your design wherever possible when
designing (TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE).
Questions?
Activity:
Make your own water filter
In country groups,
• Decide what to do
• Buy materials
• Make filter
• Test filter
• Present to class
How does the activity relate to the real world?
Activity
Real World
Different amounts of
money per group
• Based on actual country’s Gross Domestic
Product (GDP)
Illegible instructions
• Based on actual country’s illiteracy rate
• Lack of education and access to information
Resourcefulness of
groups with little
money
• People in poorer countries have their own
coping mechanisms
Collaboration between
countries
• North-South co-operation
• Richer countries formed the G8 and OECD
• Poorer countries formed the Group of 24
