Mobile M2M Applications
Oregon Connections 2014 – “ The Internet of Things”
Presentation by Neil Grubb
October 23, 2014
M2M, Connected Devices, & IoT
Wireless Connected Devices
• 1950 - TV Remote Control
• 1960 - Garage Door Opener
• 1969 - Cordless Phone
• 1991 - Wireless Mouse
What is M2M?
Machine to machine (M2M) is a broad label that
can be used to describe any technology that
enables networked devices to exchange
information and perform actions without the manual
assistance of humans.
Wireless is a natural transport for M2M
Dumb sensors paired with smart phones become
exponentially more valuable.

Converged FiberWireless Networks
Other Wireless Flavors
• WiFi –a local area wireless technology using
2.4Ghz & 5ghz radio waves to exchange
data or connect to the internet
• Bluetooth – wireless technology standard
for exchanging data over short distances
using 2.4Ghz radio waves.
• NFC – Near Field Communication is a form
of short range wireless communication
using a modulated electric field
• IR – Infrared communication uses a
wavelength somewhat longer than those
of red light.
• RFID – Radio Frequency Identification
wireless data transfer for purposes of
automatically identifying and tracking
objects.
How will M2M help the consumer?
Lively – Safety and Security for Seniors
•
•
•
•
Passive activity sensors measure healthy living patterns
Let family member know when something my be wrong like a missed meal or
decreased activity
Lively dashboard can be viewed anywhere
No Internet connection required
Xiaomi - Fitness Band
The Smart Crockpot - WeMo
• WiFi and 3G/4G Enabled Crockpot
• Stuck at work? Conveniently adjust cook settings.
• Simple WeMo app for smartphones
Adidas - Mi Ball
• View how fast you're kicking the ball and its
trajectory
• Set challenges for yourself and save records so that
you can compare them at a later point.
Final thoughts on M2M & IoT
• All companies with products out in the world have a
potential base to integrate sensing, connectivity, and
intelligence to open new revenue streams
• For every Internet-connected PC or handset, there will
be five to 10 other types of M2M devices sold.
• Any business that is using communications and
networking technology today will easily expand into
the Internet of Things.
