Highlight of Current Activities (1)
 Developing standards to support an M2M architecture and
a set of capabilities for M2M services. Promoting innovation
across the industry by providing an end-to-end generic
vision of the M2M communications and services. The
multiple vertical applications will be easily deployed in a
general framework, allowing development of services
independently of the underlying network.
 Coordinating with other SDOs and consortia to achieve the
first step of the "Internet of Services".
 First release expected in 2010.
2
Highlight of Current Activities (2)
 Cooperating with ETSI TCs TISPAN, ERM, MSG, PLT and
the other European Standards Organisations (ESOs) on
the work in answer to EC standardisation mandate M/441
on "smart metering".
 Cooperating with ETSI TC TISPAN and TC ERM and the
other ESOs in answering the EC standardisation mandate
M/436 on "RFID privacy and security".
 Other EC mandates to come: smart grid, electric vehicle,
Internet of Things.
 Numerous links with other SDOs and industrial alliances,
that have launched activities on sensor networks,
connected devices, etc., …

ETSI TC M2M Release 1 Plan
1
Stage 1 (requirements) Jan 2010
 Requirements document is stable content wise; some editorial work
remains.
2
Stage 2 (architecture) July 2010
 Architecture:
 Key capability identified
 Message flows documented
 Identified key interfaces for release 1 stage 3 (detailed specs)
3
Stage 3 (protocols) December 2010
 Protocols:
 New WI agreed at the last meeting to progress to stage 3 work for 3
interfaces: mId, dIa and mIa

Conclusions
 M2M related technologies are in place, and the
market has massive potential for growth.
 Standardization is essential for long term
development of the technology and for
interoperability of networks and services.
 Operators, integrators and vendors have expressed
the need to standardize end-to-end M2M.
 Regulation in Europe, USA and Asia is pushing for
a standards based solution.
 It is essential to have globally compatible
standards.
