AID AFTER A DISASTER
• 21/07/2015
Lesson aims:
• To find out about different types of aid.
• To understand why some countries are more
likely to need aid than others.
Lesson starter
• What type of aid is given to a country after a
natural disaster?
• Discuss with the people around you and
write down your ideas.
• What are the two main categories of aid?
Two types of aid.
Short term aid.
Long term aid.
What do you
think each of
these could
mean?
Short and long term aid.
• Short term aid:
▫ This is help with things that people need right
away. Basic things people would need to
survive right after a disaster.
• Long term aid:
▫ This is help for a country over a long period of
time. It will help rebuild the country after the
destruction.
What is aid?
• “Aid is another word for ‘help’. Richer
countries give poorer countries aid to help
them to make a better future for
themselves.”

Aid lesson 2: Case studies
• Aims of the lesson:
• To re-cap the type of aid that you think was
given after each of the case studies that we
looked at in class.
Poster paper task
• Each group should be given a piece of flip
chart paper to write on and it should be
broken up into 4 sections.
• In each section write the name of the case
staudy that we looked at for our (1) Volcanic
eruption (2) Earthquake (3) Tsunami (4)
Tropical storm.
Writing frame.
• (1) Volcanic eruption – Etna + Merapi
• (2) Earthquake – Your own choice
• (3) Tsunami – Boxing day tsunami
• (4) Tropical storm – Hurricane Katrina
Next step
• For each of the disasters you must
write down the aid that was given.
• Colour code the aid into long and
short term aid.
Developed and Developing countries.
• Q) What type of country is more
likely to need aid after a disaster, a
developed or developing country?
• Discuss in your groups and write
down your answer in your jotter
under this question above.
• Environmental Hazards Assessment: What
you need to know.
• For tropical storms, earthquakes, tsunamis
and volcanic eruptions you must know:
Why they occur.
Where they occur (in the world and why)
How they can be predicted.
How they can be prevented.
What steps can be taken to reduce damage.
What aid was given.
Why some countries are affected far more
than others by similar disasters.
