Troubleshooting
Critical Thinking and Retention
Try this
A lot of this has been stolen from

Assistant Professor of Psychology

See how easy it is to forget very simple things.

A good way to try to troubleshoot and think about technical issues is:
The Scientific Method

– The orderly, systematic procedures researchers follow as they identify a research
problem, design a study to investigate the problem, collect and analyze data,
draw conclusions, and communicate their findings
Find your horoscope
You have mentally granted someone power over part of your life, and it now feels as though this person is ruling your every move. Though you are performing for
this person's approval, you are still free.
Though you consider yourself to be a practical sort, someone brings out your sensual side. Involve yourself with Sagittarius and then stand back and be amazed
by the way Sagittarius energizes your talents.
There's a sort of magic trick to pull off, and you do it brilliantly -- if you prepare. As in all magic, the preparation is essential, as is knowing your audience.
In your attempts to make everyone happy, you may lose sight of one extremely important detail: Your life is precious too. Take a wild and memorable action to
drive the point home.
Your charm is undeniable, and you know just whom to direct it toward now. Take advantage of your chance to make an impression.
Life is your classroom, and you are an excellent student now as your powers of observation are magnified by the planets. Even your teachers will learn from the
questions that you ask.
In some ways you're still paying your dues. But soon the changing of an old guard will leave you in charge. Tonight, you make wise decisions based on nothing
but heart.
Financial success and social savvy are intrinsically linked. People won't hand you a sweet opportunity just because they like you. Though, if you are qualified and
they like you, the opportunity is yours.
You see a shortcut to getting what you want, but consider deeply whether this route would be as fulfilling. Success is sweetest when it is earned.
There's nothing that gets your goat more than incompetence. Someone isn't doing a job right, and it's affecting you. When you accept this person's inability to
perform and lower your expectations, the problem goes away.
Put the most time into the relationship that is most important to you. When your personal life is strong, your finances and career fall into place.
You're aching to get training in a certain area, but the price for this has been unaffordable. Finally this changes.

Can horoscopes be helpful to some people?
What is the potential risk of believing horoscopes? Or
simply find best solution to problem and immediately
try to solve it without processing the info. We are all
guilty of this.
What ever happened to Ms. Cleo?
What role does hit or miss troubleshooting opposed to
actual planning and critical thinking when it comes to
troubleshooting?
Evaluating Research / Information
• Are research claims always accurate?
• Critical Thinking
– To objectively evaluate claims, propositions, and
conclusions to determine whether they follow logically
from the evidence presented.
• Independent Thinking: Do we automatically accept
and believe what we read or hear?
• Suspension of Judgment: Gathering relevant and
up-to-date information on all sides of an issue.
• Willingness to modify or abandon prior judgments:
Evaluating new evidence, even when it contradicts
preexisting beliefs.
• How do the above relate to your life?
• Media reports, infomercials, parents, peers, religion, etc.

How is your encoding?
Have you ever finished reading a page in a book and had no
idea what you just read? Why does that happen?
Could you identify something you’ve seen a thousand times?
Short-Term Memory
• Holds approximately 7 (+ or – 2) chunks of information
-Chunking
-When have you used chunking?
-Displacement
-When have you experienced displacement?
• Stored less than 30 seconds
– Rehearsal
– Elaborative Rehearsal

Let’s test your short-term memory capacity
In a short time, I will begin reading a list of 24
words. You should each have a handout with
instructions to follow. Do not pay attention to
you neighbor, for s/he has different instructions.
Regardless of the instructions you received, no
one should be writing the words that I read. If
that is not clear, please ask for clarification now.
I will read the words at a pace of about one word
per three seconds.
Levels-of-processing theory
► A single memory system
► Encoding based on the meaning of information
 Emphasizes the degree to which new material is
mentally analyzed
 Shallow analysis: passive learning, rehearsal
 Deep analysis: active learning, elaborative
rehearsal
 Long-term retention and comprehension

In a short time, I will present a list of words to you on this
screen. Your task is to read each word to yourself at a pace
of about one word per second. When you have finishing
reading through the entire list, look down at your paper and
write as many of the words down as you can.

DO NOT look back up at the screen after you are finished
reading through the list of words.

Distortion in Memory

Occurs when we alter the memory of an
event or experience in order to fit our
beliefs, expectations, logic, prejudices, etc.
 This is not something we do purposefully
 How does this occur in real life?
• Sensory adaptation
– An adjustment in sensory
capacity following prolonged
exposure to stimuli
– Receptor cells respond best to
changes in stimulation.
– How have you experienced
sensory adaption?
