Unit 5
Summarize the text using the tips below:
1. weep for her smoking daughter
2. the same brand of cigarettes that killed her
grandfather
3. attracted by tobacco advertising and film actors
4. health was getting worse and worse
5. eventually died from
6. the confident or fashionable older man or the
beautiful, “worldly” young woman smoking
7. is slowly killing herself
8. a form of self-battering
9. stop smoking at least at families
BookⅡ
Unit 5
A mother weeps for her smoking daughter:
she is smoking the same brand of cigarettes
that killed her grandfather. Her grandfather
used to have glowing eyes before he was
attracted by tobacco advertising and film
actors and began to smoke. However, he did
not look elegant or fashionable as the
advertisements showed. His health was getting
worse and worse, and eventually died from
“the poor man’s friend”, pneumonia.
BookⅡ
Unit 5
In the Third World countries, the mother
sees many large advertisement signs with the
confident or fashionable older man or the
beautiful, “worldly” young woman smoking.
As a result, in these poor countries, smoking
makes the poor even poorer and weaker.
The mother feels deeply hurt to see the
care she took raising her daughter thrown
away as her 16-year-old daughter is slowly
killing herself. Smoking is a form of selfbattering that also batters their relatives and
the people around them, thus, to avoid more
tragedies, everyone must stop smoking at
least at families.

Unit 5
Structure Analysis
A Paragraph of Cause and Effect
The writer of the text presents us with a horrible
picture of the harmful effects of smoking, and the
harmful effects are described as a result of the
cause—smoking.
Typical examples are:
BookⅡ
Unit 5
1) Cause: I do not remember when he started to
cough. Perhaps it was unnoticeable at first, a
little coughing in the morning as he lit his first
cigarette upon getting out of bed.
Effect: By the time I was sixteen, my daughter’s
age, his breath was a wheeze, embarrassing to
hear; he could not climb stairs without resting
every third of fourth step. It was not unusual for
him to cough for an hour. (Para. 4)
BookⅡ
Unit 5
2) Cause: When I travel to Third World
countries I see many people like my father
and daughter. There were large
advertisement signs directed at them both:
the tough, confident or fashionable older man,
the beautiful, “worldly” young woman, both
dragging away.
BookⅡ
Unit 5
Effect: In these poor countries, as in American
inner cities and on reservations, money that
should be spent for food goes instead to the
tobacco companies; over time, people starve
themselves of both food and air, effectively
weakening and hooking their children, eventually
killing themselves. (Para. 6)
