Slow Change
 The first settlements of humans began to change from
hunting and gathering to more sedentary.
 We are looking about the time period around 10,000 BC.
 Populations were small and life was hard.
 The idea of agriculture did not happen overnight it took 100s
if not 1000s of years
What is agriculture?
 Take a few moments to come up with a working definition
and examples.

Root crops
Tubers of all kinds are an excellent source of carbohydrates. Also, many are
source of fiber and potassium. Why would this be
important during this time??
Grasses: Wheat and Barley
Seeds
 It seems so simple yet man did not realize how seeds
developed into plants for food. It mostly likely began to
happen on accident.
 There is no documented evidence of how this happened
because it was before civilization existed.
 Most likely humans began to return to the same spots during
their migrations and realized how the dropped seeds had
grown into productive plants.
Stable food source
 Take a moment and write/think about 5 things that changed
in terms of culture, lifestyle, and activities after early humans
developed a stable food source through agriculture.
 What are some things that made some areas more successful
than others?
 What things could people around 8000-3000 BC do to
improve the yields of the fields?
