organisms that possess a novel combination
of genetic material obtained through the use
of modern biotechnology.
Use of organic agricultural practices
For the purposes of the agricultural census, an agricultural production
system must satisfy several conditions to be considered organic.




It must be organic by intent and not by default. Thus, nonsustainable production systems that do not use synthetic
inputs are not considered organic.
The produce must mainly be for sale, not for selfconsumption. This is because the market, through pricing
mechanisms and certification requirements, provides the best
way to assess whether a product is organic.
The produce must be labelled or otherwise recognized by
consumers as organic. Many countries have a national
certification system to certify that products have been
produced in accordance with organic standards..
