Finding the Purpose of Life
He met Alice

Alice was 9 years old
Her father, Mason
Cogswell, didn’t
believe there was
anyone who could
teach deaf people in
America.
Purpose…
His first encounter
with Alice outside
lead him to a desire
to teach
Thomas then taught
her to spell the word
hat and her name
All Thomas had
taught her
impressed her father
so much that he
changed his mind
about Deaf Education
Dr. Cogswell then
wanted to start a
school and asked
Thomas to help
Cogswell sent him to
London to learn how
to teach the deaf.
London
Thomas was not
impressed with the
school in London.
He wasn’t welcomed
by the school owner
They agreed to
teach Thomas their
way of teaching the
deaf…but he
declined.
Invitation to Deaf Language
Thomas met Laurent Clerc and Jean
Massieu in London
This lead to a yearning to learn about
Deaf Culture and their language.
Thomas went to France with them and
stayed at their school for 2 months
There he took lessons from the
teachers and learned sign.
Back Home
Clerc traveled back to America with
Thomas.
He continued to learn sign and taught
America that Deaf people could be well
educated.
They opened The American Asylum at
Hartford for the Education and
Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb.
In 1895 the name changed to The
American School for the Deaf.
School and Thereafter
Thomas was principal and both Clerc
and Thomas taught
School started with only 6 students and
Alice was one of them.
Thomas married one of the students,
Sophia Fowler, when she graduated.
They had 8 children
In 1830 Thomas retired and by then
there were 100’s of Deaf students who
could read and write
Thomas Retired
Thomas spent his time writing,
preaching, supporting Deaf education
and sign language.
He also loved to write children’s books.
When he died he
was 63 years old.
