Summer Education Programs April 2012 Goal/Purpose Required Summer School Programs: 1. Promotion/Retention – Students failing to meet course or grade level standards; 2. English Language Learners (ELL) – Pre-K/K students; 3. Extended School Year Services – Special Education Students; Additional Summer School Programs: 1. Accelerated Instruction for STAAR EOC re- testers; 2. Accelerated Instruction for TAKS re-testers; 3. Students scoring below HISD standard (TBD) on STAAR Reading & Math in grades 3–8; 4. Credit Accrual/Recovery – Students accruing/recovering additional credits to graduate; 5. ELL/Newcomers – Secondary students who are academically behind peers; 6. *SAT/PSAT/COMPASS PREP program for middle & high school students; and 7. *Other School Based Programs (School Funded Enrichment Programs). In addition, Students scoring below HISD standard on STAAR Reading & Math in grades 3 – 8 will need to be provided services. • High Schools will provide programs for credit recovery and for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) & Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) remediation. English Language Learners (ELL) – Pre-K/K students: • Specialized instruction will be offered for all pre-kindergarten and kindergarten ELL students. • Schools will receive funding from HISD for a projected number of ELL summer students. A previously identified number of schools will receive some additional ELL funds from the Multilingual department for the summer school program. • ELL programs will be funded through state and grant allocations and Title I, Part A. English Language Learners (ELL) – Pre-K/K students: • HISD Elementary and Middle School Migrant students attending summer school will be provided tutoring. • HISD High School Migrant students will be offered tuition vouchers to attend the Houston Community College’s adult high school for credit accrual and/or recovery. Extended School Year Services – Special Education Students: • These programs will be available for all Special Education students and will be funded through federal stimulus IDEA funds. Middle & High School – Secondary Programs: • • • • • Accelerated Instruction for STAAR EOC re-testers; Accelerated Instruction for TAKS re-testers; Credit Accrual/Recovery (Students accruing/recovering additional credits to graduate); ELL/Newcomers (Secondary students who are academically behind peers); and *SAT/PSAT/COMPASS PREP program for middle & high school students (*Funded through Department - College & Career Preparation) Other School-Based Program – School funded enrichment programs: • These are unique programs offered by individual schools that will be tuition based, grant-funded or funded through school’s setaside accounts. • School-based unique (enrichment) programs may have different dates and/or hours depending on the needs of the program. • High school tuition rates for original course credit and for indistrict students are yet to be determined. Summer School – Dates & Hours • Teachers: June 6–July 12, 2012 (20 Days) (Teacher training dates – June 6th and 7th) • Students: June 11-July 12, 2012 (18 Days) (High schools may have extended days throughout summer) • Days of Operations: Monday-Thursday from 8:00 – 2:45 pm (High schools may have extended hours) • No summer classes: Each Friday, including July 4 - July 6 Summer School – Implications • Teacher rate: The standard teacher rate is $30 per hour not to exceed 7.5 hours per day for 20 days (Includes a 45 minute prep time daily for teachers). • Employment: Only certified, current HISD teachers are eligible to teach summer school. • Non-Instructional personnel: Will be paid the hourly rate of their daily pay. • Crossing guards: Will be paid $15.82-$22.95 per hour. • Apollo Tutors: Will be eligible to be hired for summer tutoring by any school. • Stipends: NO stipends. Additional funds will be loaded for a Teacher Lead (1.5 hours for 20 days = $900) and Student Information Rep (7.5 hours for 24 days x hourly rate). Summer School – Implications • Summer School Budget: HISD’s External Funding Department (Title I) will work with the Budget Department to determine each schools’ dollar amount for summer school. • Elementary & Middle Schools: The Curriculum Department is providing Pre and Post Tests in core subject areas for all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. • High Schools: May be open additional days beyond the summer school window to allow students to participate in on-line credit recovery courses and TAKS remediation. Summer School – Implications • Transportation Costs: HISD will set aside $500,000 to cover any transportation costs for the 2012 bond summer program. Schools must be on the official Bond Office list of requested school summer closures. • Food Services: All HISD students will have breakfast and lunch available to them Monday-Thursday at every available school. Suggested district-wide serving times: Breakfast 8:00 – 8:30 & Lunch 11:55 – 12:25. Schools may work with Food Services to adjust serving times as needed. Students not enrolled in summer school will be given information on neighborhood centers providing summer meals on Fridays. State Testing – STAAR & TAKS Specific Test Dates: July 9th – TAKS ELA and STAAR English I & III Writing July 10th – TAKS Math and STAAR English I & III Reading July 11th – TAKS Science and STAAR English II Writing July 12th – TAKS Social Studies and STAAR English II Reading State Testing – STAAR & TAKS • State Test Window: Monday, July 9, 2012 through Friday, July 13, 2012 (*HISD will be closed Friday July 13th. All testing must be finalized by end of day July 12th) • STAAR Tests Eligible for Administration: Algebra I & II, Biology, Chemistry, English I - III (Reading), English I - III (Writing), Geometry, Physics, US History, world Geography, and World History QUESTIONS?
