Essential Question
Why is it important for humans
to look for meaning in such
experiences as suffering and
death?
I CAN:
1. Explain human suffering and evil in a world
created by a good God
2. Discover how the story of Cain and Abel is
reflected in contemporary literature
3. Understand the biblical consequences of
human sinfulness, selfishness, and pride
What Happened?
God gave first man and woman free
reign, with one exception: Do not eat
of the tree of knowledge of good and
evil
They then begin to deceive themselves
and begin to make excuses to God.
Forbidden Fruit
The serpent deceives Eve
into eating the forbidden
fruit; has become
associated with Satan
Forbidden fruit=unknown
In western culture we
portray it as an apple
St. James Vulgate- In
Latin word malum can
mean both apple and evil
Consequences
Childbirth became painful
and difficult
Death entered the world
Adam and Eve driven
from garden so they
cannot eat from Tree of
Life
Cherubims and a flaming
sword guard the garden
Perspectives
Humans have a free will
and are capable of
choosing between good
and evil
Genesis 3 is the story of
the “the fall”
Often refered to as original
sin*: the condition of sin
that marks all humans as a
result of Adam and Eve’s
disobediene to God
Of Man’s first disobedience
and the fruit, Of that
forbidden tree whose mortal
taste Brought death into the
world, and all our woe.
John Milton (1608-1674)
The Single Hound by Emily
Dickinson
Eden is that old-fashioned House
We dwell in every day,
Without suspecting our abode
Until we drive away.
How fair, on looking back, the Day
We sauntered from the Door,
Unconscious our returning
But Discover it no more.
The First Murder
(4:6-10)
Genesis 4: recounts the first
murder
It was fratricide- murder of a
brother by a brother
When God asks Cain where his
brother is, Cain responds, “Am
I my brother’s keeper?”(4:9)
Teaches us humans are
responsible for one another
Cain receives both punishment
and mercy (Mark of Cain)

John Steinbeck East of
Eden
I believe that there is one story in the world, and
only one…Humans are caught—in their lives, in
their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in
their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness
and generosity, too—in a net of good and
evil…this one story (Cain and Abel) is the basis
of all human neurosis—and if you take the fall
along with it, you have the total of psychic
troubles that can happen to a human.
From Bad to Worse
Cain settles in the land
of Nod- meaning
wandering
Built the first city
God became frustrated
with the virtues of early
civilization and decided
to destroy it

A Restart (7:17-18, 22-24)
Noah is asked to build an
ark and prepare for a
flood that will wipe out
the face of the Earth
Two important things:
1. Noah is not the captain
of the ship; God is
2. It had never rained on
the earth before

Noah sent out a dove three
times:
It returned empty
It returned with an olive
branch
It did not return
As a covenant, sign of peace,
and to never flood the earth
again, God sent forth a
rainbow

Noah has three sons:
Shem- Middle Eastern and
Asian people
Japheth- Europeans
Ham- Africans
Ham was cursed by his
father and that is one area
where slavery has been
misquoted in Scripture.
