ACGME’S NEXT ACCREDITATION
SYSTEM

• CHARGE:
– Describe the skills needed by all graduates to
practice competently and safely
– Describe acquisition of those skills by level of
training ( entering/mid-level/graduating)
EVERY SIX MONTHS..
• Clinical Competency Committee CCC will
– Review ALL evaluations for EACH resident
– Determine EACH resident’s progress for EACH
Milestone
– Advise PD of evaluations/recommendations
• De-identified information will be sent to
ACMGE
• Each resident will receive feedback on
progress along Milestones
WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING NOW?
• Review current system and methods for
resident evaluation/promotion
• Mesh current instruments with Milestones
• Map Rotation Goals and Objectives to
Milestones
• Identify needed changes in G&O and new
tools
• Develop “shared mindset”

attend/evaluate
• Be sure you understand evaluation tools and
how CCC will use information
• Work toward consensus in grading

• Be certain you understand Milestones and
mapping process for your rotations
• Be prepared to get feedback other than
“Honors” or “All 9’s”
• Be part of the conversation
CCC
• Steep learning curve
• Develop a shared mindset for each Milestone
• Every 6 months
– Evaluate EACH resident on EACH Milestone
– Send recommendations to PD
• Give feedback frequently to
– Faculty
– Residents
– Program Director
ONCE A YEAR…
• Program Evaluation Committee PEC
– Review all outcomes including aggregate
Milestones
– Develop action plan as needed
• RRC
– Review all program outcomes including deidentified Milestones
• Initially compare program to own prior results
• Eventually develop national standards
– Determine ongoing accreditation
SHARED GOALS
• Consistency in established outcomes of training
for ALL programs
• Consistency in evaluation of residents
• Improved feedback to residents to
improve performance
• Better preparation for eventual role in practice
