National level initiatives - fFORTE




fFORTE – Women in Science and Technology
A national level initiative to support women in science and technology
Initiated in 2002 by the Council for Science and Technology
fFORTE is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Education, Science and
Culture and the Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology
 Initiative supports women during all phases of their education and
career
 It has two main parts: the university sector and the non-university and
industrial research sector

National level initiatives - FEMtech
 FEMtech is part of fFORTE
 FEMtech‘s focus is on women in industrial and non-university research
institutes
 The initiative concentrates on supporting four areas:
 Careers in industrial research
 Women in the non-university research sector
 Degree courses in polytechnics that could attract more women into technical
subjects
 Analysing the Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology’s own RTD
programmes

Monitoring gender inequalities
 University sector
 High legislative standards to support women in research
 Affirmative action plans/ Women’s representatives
 Biannual monitoring as part of the Science Report to the parliament
 Non-university research sector
 Projects established to monitor and analyse women in the non-university
research sector (ARC, Joanneum)
 Data collection to include quantitative and qualitative characteristics
 FEMtech to support cohesion and networking between actors
 Increasing activities on firm level (ÖMV)

ARC – approach to gender equality
 Aim: to increase the number of women working for the ARC Group,
especially those in management positions
 Through: establishing a comprehensive monitoring system that
includes:
 Applications, recruitment and promotion
 Project activities, publications, conferences, teaching activities
 Contract researchers, masters students and PhDs
 Through analysing internal barriers to the promotion of women
 Developing initiatives to counteract discrimination

Multi-faceted approach required
 National level commitment to increase awareness, to stimulate debate,
to develop coherence and facilitate exchange
 Monitoring on the level of the individual institutes, universities and
firms
 Exchange of experience on successful policies and initiatives on
different levels including
 Dissemination of EU activities
 Exchange of success stories in the national context
 European and international good practise
