What we learned in 2006
• Expanding NSLW theme beyond the week of
NSLW provided great flexibility for schools
• Voting period will be extended to the end of
NSLW
• The system of paper ballots and online voting
worked effectively
• Campaign was a great way to gain feedback
from kids and parents

Design a Candidate Contest
New in 2007
• Students should create a sketch or drawing of a
candidate to run in the 2008 elections
•They can submit a traditional sketch or drawing, or use
computer software to design their candidate
• They need to fill out the contest entry form, name their
candidate and tell us why their candidate is a healthy
school lunch
• The national level winning candidates will run against
Pete Pizza (winner 2006) and winner of the 2007
elections

Design a Candidate Contest
2 levels of judging
1) Local judging (school level)
• Consider judging local contest by grade level
and perhaps giving small prizes
• A maximum of 3 winners per school can be sent
to SNA headquarters for national judging
• SNA will not accept submission directly from
students. School nutrition staff or a school
official must send in the 3 winning entries.

Design a Candidate Contest

• Submissions will be accepted at SNA
headquarters between August 1 and October 31,
2007
• 3 national winning designs will be chosen
• Winning candidate designs will be
professionally rendered and run in the Vote 2008
elections

• Paper Ballots: have students tally up votes
per grade or school
• Create a Voting Day for each grade
• Work with teachers to help promote the
theme, teach about elections
• Create low-cost costumes for kids or staff
• Determine process for ‘design a candidate’
promotion
