Academic Fellowships
Brandeis has a rich tradition of undergraduate research, with approximately one-third of the class conducting an
independent study or thesis before graduation. Undergraduates may apply for funding from the Schiff
Undergraduate Fellows Program or the Undergraduate Research Program. Often these research experiences lead
to students receiving prestigious academic fellowships such as the Marshall, Rhodes and Truman scholarships.

Assistance is given to international students and scholars in understanding the American educational
experience and offers advice and counsel on financial, academic and personal issues that may impact their

Pre-Health Advising
Approximately forty percent of each incoming class is interested in a career in a health
profession. Pre-Health advising provides guidance about the requirements for these careers,
including mandatory coursework and suggested co-curricular activities. The acceptance rate
to medical, dental, and veterinary schools for students from Brandeis is significantly above

Approximately thirty-five percent of the junior class studies abroad and students may study
abroad in any one of 250 approved programs located in 70 different countries. In the last five
years, students have studied abroad in locations as varied as France, China, Morocco, Australia,
South Africa, Israel, Mongolia, and Costa Rica. Brandeis uses a home school tuition fee model,
which allows students with financial aid to study abroad.

Transitional Year Program (TYP)
TYP is a one-year academic program for students who attended under resourced high schools or who have
overcome significant personal challenges to further their education. Each year, the program provides an
additional year of college level instruction to 20 high school graduates, so that the participating students
may be competitive a a highly selective university, such as Brandeis.

Orientation
•Provide an effective orientation/welcome program three times a year for
incoming new students – traditional first years, transfers, Mid Years,
Gateway
•Provide programs beyond the first days of classes to continue the transition
to college
