What is RDE ?
• A concept
• An idea
• A philosophy
• It is the ability to believe in yourselves, and
to acheive

Demonstrating the effectiveness
of RDE
To demonstrate the power of RDE, I have
taken two of Kvaerner’s bread and butter
designs;
• Single hydraulic jumpers
• Hydraulic jumper bundles

Approach to design
The approach of RDE is to minimise the time
required to design any product
We start, therefore, by breaking down the
design into its constituent variables to find
out what it is made of

Constituents of a Single
Hydraulic Jumper
We find that a Single Hydraulic Jumper consists
of the following major variables;
• Hose type
• Connector type
Based on the principles
of Template Design
using Generic Modular
Units.

Constituents of a Single
Hydraulic Jumper (cont.)
...and minor variables;
• Drawn by, Checked by and Approved by...
• Drawing number
• Revision
• Date
• (etc)
• Adaptable
• Flexible
• Responsive

Major Variables
Typically, each major variable can be broken down
into more fundamental constituents;
• Key angle
• Connector orientation
• Pressure rating
• Part number
• Weight
• (etc)

List of Materials
The same process is conducted for the List of
Materials associated with the drawing

Total Constituents
Thus, once all variables and their constituents
are known, the design is split into two
things;
• The variables
• The template

Putting it all back together
Putting it all back together again is then,
fundamentally, the design process
• Rapid Response
• Total Quality
• Right First Time

Rapid Design Environment
RDE selects the fastest and most accurate way
of putting the constituents back together
again to create any variation of the design
This is no mean feat – the Single Hydraulic
Jumper has no less than 14, 800 pictorial
variations whilst a 4-way bundle has over
59,000 !

Live Demonstration of the power
of RDE
- Audience to select different types of the
standard Single Hydraulic Jumper or
Hydraulic Jumper Bundles (up to 4–way)
from the following variables;
- Hose : 1/4” 3/8” 1/2” 3/4” (Standard)
- Connector : Key Angle Orientation Pressure

Current Work Distribution
There are 3 major areas of design in the London office
that occur on a typical project;
• SCM’s
• SUT’s
• Jumpers
These areas constitute the main design workload and
typically range in the thousands of man hours.

Scope of RDE
In it’s first year of implementation, RDE will
address the designs in two of these major
areas
... and will halve the number of hours required
• Adaptable
• Flexible
• Responsive

Conclusion
• Rapid Design Environment will ensure the
continued success of Kvaerner into the new
millennium
