Background information
 Attend
school
in the USA

The American people believe in the
value of education. They believe that
all the people must be educated so
they can make wise decisions when
they vote(选举) and decide public
issues(公共事务). Americans also
believe that each person should have
a chance to get the kind of education
that will be best for him.

Most children attend school at the age of five
when they enter kindergarten(幼儿园).
Children do not really study at this time. They
only play for half the day and learn what
school is like. The program includes play
activities, painting, singing and dancing.

Children attend elementary schools(小学) for
the next six years at about 6 years of age. After
they finish elementary schools, they go to
secondary school for three years and high
school for another three years. In most places
of the USA, children must attend school until
they are sixteen, or until they leave high school,
usually at the age of 17 or 18.
