Golden Rule
Just because you can,
doesn’t mean you should.
Golden rule
• Priority should be your learning
outcomes, not incorporating
innovations.
• Remember your learner and their
technology.
Images
• File formats
• Instructional uses
• Terminology
Images
File formats
• GIF (Graphical Interchange Format)
– Compressed
– Indexed color
– Images
Images
File formats
• JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
– Compressed
– RGB color
– Photos
Images
Instructional uses
Dual coding theory (Paivio, 1986)
Encoding occurs in 2 ways:
1. Visual-pictorial
2. Auditory-verbal
Images
Instructional uses
Cognitive load theory
(Sweller & Chandler, 1994; Sweller, 1999)
Limited processing capacity
1. Intrinsic cognitive
2. Extrinsic cognitive
When a graphic is poorly designed or presents
irrelevant material, the learner engages in
inefficient cognitive processing
Images
Instructional uses
Practically speaking: make it simple,
relevant, and select the most important
elements to represent graphically.
Keep in mind that lots of graphics are
added to a site in order to add "interest"
but our goal is instructional. The graphics
should have a purpose.
Images
Terminology
•
•
•
•
•
Anti-aliasing = smoothness of edges
Interlaced = layered GIF
Progressive = layered JPG
Thumbnail = small photo
ALT tag = code behind an image
Animation
• Can be GIF
• Sequence of images or frames
• Illusion of movement
Howstufffworks.com
Animation Software
• GIFmation
• Photo Impact GIF animator
• Photo Shop, Image Ready
Video
Make sure there is an instructional reason
for doing it.
The top priority when choosing a form of
technology should be the outcomes to be
achieved, not the ability to incorporate
something innovative.
Video
File formats
•
•
•
•
MPEG
Shockwave
Quicktime
RealPlayer
Video
Instructional Uses
• Make sure it is something that truly
needs to be presented with movement
• Consider pressing to a CD
Video
Terminology
• Download: file transfers to student
• Streaming: continuous stream of video;
no file transfer
Audio
File Formats
• WAV
• MP3
Transmission
• Web-based
• CD-ROM
Audio
Instructional Uses
• Language instruction-Listen to foreign
language
• Music instruction-listen to orchestra
• History-to listen to great speeches
• Health instruction-listen to heart and
lung sounds

• Compare locales
• Monitor progress on a project and be
able to move through time
Virtual Field Trips
•
•
•
•
Web-based
Usually includes an “expert” guide
Allows individual pacing
Often includes an instructor’s guide
Virtual Field Trips
Instructional Uses
