OfSTED recommendations
http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/beyond-2012-outstanding-physical-education-for-all
All school leaders should:
•Routinely monitor the quality of teaching and leadership of PE,
measuring its impact on pupil’s learning and progress, and taking
decisive action when outcomes for pupils are less than consistently good
•Provide weekly opportunities for all pupils to participate and compete
in school sport to enable the most able pupils to attain high standards of
performance
•Increase the time given to teaching core PE each week, where this is
less than 2 hours, to enable all pupils to exceed NCPE expectations and
lead a healthy lifestyle

OfSTED recommendations
All subject leaders should:
•Articulate a clear vision for making PE good or outstanding and ensure
that improvement plans are fully understood and supported by all staff
•Set the highest expectations of staff and pupils and model good practice
•Provide schemes of work for all areas of activity that include clear
guidance for colleagues on the step by step stages of teaching specific
skills
•Work in partnership with parents and health agencies to enable
overweight and obese pupils to participate regularly in a personalised
programme of PE as part of a healthy lifestyle

OfSTED subject specific guidance
Outstanding leadership of PE ensures that pupils, and particular groups of pupils
have excellent educational experiences in lessons and in extra-curricular
activities, and are very well-equipped for the next stage of their education,
training or employment.
Teaching in PE is outstanding because it is highly physical. This, together with a
rich and relevant PE curriculum and a broad extra-curricular programme of sport
and physical activity, contributes to pupils’ outstanding learning, physical
development, high participation and achievement.
Rigorous monitoring and evaluation ensure that teaching consistently reflects
the highest expectations of staff and the highest aspirations for all groups of
pupils, including disabled pupils or those with special educational needs, those
for whom the Pupil Premium provides support and the most able.

Best practice is spread effectively through excellent partnerships with other local
schools and providers of community sport and physical activity, and by
outstanding involvement in national (and local) PE and sport networks.
High levels of literacy are promoted through appropriate use of reading and
writing to support and enhance pupils’ physical development and contribute to
their outstanding learning and achievement.
PE makes an excellent contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural
development.

Primary School Sport Funding
Purpose of funding:
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE
and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose they do this.
Possible uses for the funding include:
Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside
primary teachers when teaching PE
New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/Sport
Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in
PE/Sport
Provision of sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for
PE/Sport
Provision of places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs

Primary School Sport Funding
Accountability:
Schools will be held to account for how they spend the sport funding. Ofsted
will strengthen its coverage of sport and PE within the Inspectors’ Handbook and
supporting guidance, so that schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will
be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision offered.
Schools will be required to include details about their sporting provision on their
school website, alongside their curriculum details, so parents can compare
sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day.
