A general expectation to keep yourself
and your classmates safe…
• When any adult in the building asks you to
stop, asks you your name, or approaches
you in general, it is your responsibility to
respond respectfully and follow their
directions. Failure to do so may result in
consequences ranging from a warning to a
parent/student/administrator conference, to
a suspension.
No throwing snow, particularly at
the bus loading area!
If you do, it will cost you three days off of the bus!
Speaking of buses…
• Students that ride the activity buses will be required to have a daily bus
pass to board.
• Coaches and/or afterschool activity supervisors will hand out passes at
the end of practice/the activity.
• No bus pass = no ride home.
• This starts Monday, September 12, 20011.
• Oh, yes, bus safety tests will be coming to you at a home base near
you!
Lunchroom expectations…
(since we are here!)
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Enjoy your lunch
WALK! Do not linger!
Wait in line like everybody else
Clean up after yourself
Dispose of your trash and tray accordingly
Do not throw things
Keep a calm, controlled, level of volume
Remain seated 95% of the time
Ask an adult for permission to use the restroom
Treat others with respect
Failure to follow these rules will result in a loss of
lunchroom privileges and/or cleaning tables!
No Back Packs Allowed!
• This was mandated by the Minnetonka Fire Marshall as 1,000 students
carrying 1,000 backpacks constitutes a safety violation.
• As a general rule, students may not carry a bag any larger than a
textbook and their three ring binder. A bag the size of a string
backpack will work.
Yes!
Passing Time
• You have five minutes of passing time between classes to
use the restroom, get a drink and get to class.
• You should not have a need to leave class as you have
plenty of time between classes.
• Do not stand in the middle of the hallway, especially the
hub near the 8th grade hallway. Folks cannot get through
when people are standing in their way.
Hall Call
(should you choose to make poor choices in the hall)
• If you choose to run, bully, use inappropriate language,
rough-house, or participate in public displays of affection
in the halls during passing time, you will be ticketed with a
hall call.
• Three hall call tickets will result in a quiet lunch. Meaning
the student will be picked up from their class prior to lunch
by a para and will eat his/her lunch in the quiet room.
• Three plus will result in a two hour after school detention
with Mr. Kusch.
Hall Passes
• When in the hallway during academic time, you
must have a hall pass/planner with you at all
times.
• Hall passes are not given out the first 10 minutes
of class, the last ten minutes of class, or during 3rd
block. On this note, take care of “business” before
or after 3rd block!
Hall Sweeps
• You need to be in class on time, remembering that passing time is the
time to use the restroom—plan accordingly.
• If you are late, you will be escorted by a staff member into the Student
Service Center (SSC) to receive a sweep pass to class.
• Teachers will lock their doors and only let you in if you have a sweep
pass.
• For every three sweep passes you receive and beyond, you will receive
one quiet lunch.
• After three quiet lunches in a semester, a total of nine tardies, students
will serve a two hour detention after school with Mr. Kusch. Failure to
show up for detention will result in future detentions, loss of
afterschool privileges, and/or suspensions.
• Remember: Three (3) tardies = One (1) unexcused absence…more on
this later!
To help you make it to class on time…
• Bells are ringing!
• There will be three bells of note:
• Before school, there will be a five minute
warning bell, a one minute warning bell
followed by “the” final bell.
• Between classes, there will also be a one
minute warning bell followed by a final bell
After School Sweeps
• The only students allowed to remain in school after 3:00 PM are those
who are directly supervised by a staff member. This includes students
in school sponsored sports, clubs and Achieve.
• Students working with teachers/clubs must sign-in at the SSC and must
remain with their teacher until the activity bus arrives, until their
parents pick them up, or wait at the “A” door until a ride arrives.
• Students who fail to comply with this rule will have a parent contacted,
could lose after school privileges, and may be ticketed by the
Minnetonka police for trespassing.
The Media Center is closed after
school until further notice!
(it will only be open the last two weeks of
each Term to prep for term end tests and
projects)
Furthermore…
• Students in grades 7, 8, & 9 are not allowed
up at the high school unless they are
involved in high school athletics or
activities. Unauthorized junior high
students found up at the high school WILL
be ticketed for trespassing by Minnetonka
Police.
Other Attendance Details
• Families have two school days to excuse an absence.
• If you show up late to class more than ten minutes, you are considered
absent.
• As per the direction of Hennepin County Attorney, Mike Freeman, and
the be@school program, at the secondary level, Once a student:
– has three unexcused absences, a letter will be sent home from school
– has five unexcused absence, a letter will be sent home from school
– has six unexcused absences, the school will give notice to the Hennepin County
Attorney’s Office (HCAO). The HCAO will schedule a Parent Group Meeting
(PGM), where they will notify the parents of the truant student rights and
responsibilities and will offer assistance if necessary to help families get their kids
to school
– has nine unexcused absences, the school will send a School Team Attendance
Referral (STAR) to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. The HCAO will then
schedule a meeting with a school representative, the student and his or her parents
to make a plan.
– has accumulated 17 unexcused class period/block absences, truancy will be filed by
the school with Hennepin County.
– Remember that three (3) tardies = one (1) unexcused absence…getting to class
on time affects your overall standing with attendance!
Food
• No food or drink is allowed in the halls
between classes.
Books! Perhaps you have
heard…
• All students are to have a chapter book with them at all times
• We have a culture of reading at North
• For a person to maintain his/her current level of reading skill, he/she
must read at least 1 ½ hours per day
• By reading each and every day in class you will amass at least 40
minutes of reading, 60 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when we read
together in advisory
• Students that refuse to read will be referred to Mr. Kusch where they
will be offered a selection of kid-recommended manuscripts to choose
from. If a student continues to refuse, they will join Mr. Kusch for a
two hour detention after school.
Electronics
• First- bag and tag, with student pickup at the end of the
day from the main office.
• Second and beyond- parent/guardian has to pick it up from
the main office.
• The only electronics that can be used in class should be
electronics provided by the teacher in the room.
• As a general rule, we DO NOT investigate stolen or lost
electronics. Bring them to school at your own risk.
Treatment of Substitute
Teachers…
• Poor treatment of a sub will result in a
Wednesday afternoon detention with Mr.
Kusch. GOOD TIMES!
Closed Campus
• North Junior High School is a closed
campus. If you are found off school
grounds after you have been dropped off by
the bus or by parents, you may be searched
and may receive consequences.

Quiet Room/Quiet Lunch
Expectations…
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
It is located in room 509 B in the 500 hall
Get there quickly and quietly
It is QUIET in the quiet room
There are no electronics of any kind
Use this time to calm yourself
Get yourself ready to return to class and move on
Treat your self and others with respect, or you will find
yourself in the front office
• Use this time to fill out your reflection sheet
• There will be a phone call home from either the quiet room
supervisor, a teacher or an administrator. Expect it!
Speaking of reflection sheets…
•If you find yourself removed from class for whatever reason,
you will be required to fill out a reflection form to help you
think about the “incident” at hand by answering the
following questions in writing:
1. What did you do?
2. What was wrong with the behavior?
3. What problem were you trying to solve?
4. Next time you have this problem, how will you solve it
without hurting anyone?
5. What do you think you can do to repair the harm you
caused and restore the relationship?
Bullying, Harassment, Threats,
and Intimidation
• Bullying, threats, and intimidation will not be
tolerated at NJH.
• Consequences include warnings, mediation,
parent/student/administrator conferences,
suspensions, expulsion, etc..
• Any activity connected to the Minnesota State
High School League will have further
consequences.
Furthermore…
• Both WJH and NJH use the following to define bullying:
Bullying is any negative word, look, sign, or act that hurts a
person’s body, possessions, dignity or security and
interferes with another student’s education. Bullying
behavior causes the victim’s behavior to change. Bullying
behavior is repeated and goes on over time. There is an
imbalance of power or strength between the people
involved.
Note: Harassment is almost always bullying behavior- but
bullying behavior is not always harassment.
Fight Promoting and Drama Mongering
• Fight promoting and drama mongering will not be
tolerated at NJH.
• Consequences include warnings, mediation,
parent/student/administrator conferences,
suspensions, expulsion, etc.
• Any activity connected to the Minnesota State
High School League will have further
consequences.
Alcohol/Chemicals
• Students under the influence or in
possession of alcohol/chemicals will receive
school, Minnesota State High School
League, and law enforcement
consequences, including suspension, tickets,
etc.
• North Junior High School has zero
tolerance for alcohol/chemicals.
Fighting
• Two fight policy:
If you lay hands on another person in an aggressive
manner regardless of intent (self defense or not) you are
subject to our two fight rule.
– One fight= suspension.
– Two fights= following an investigation a
recommendation to superintendent for expulsion will be
considered.
– Any activity connected to the Minnesota State High
School League will have further consequences.
Weapons
• Hopkins North Junior High School has zero tolerance.
Possession or use of a weapon equals a range of
consequences up to a recommendation to the
superintendent for expulsion.
• Examples include laser pointers, look-alikes, pellet guns,
guns, knives, box cutters, etc.
• This being said, if a student mistakenly brings an object
considered to be a weapon to school, he or she must turn it
in to the office so as to possibly avoid consequences; i.e.
accidentally forgetting a pocket knife in their backpack
from a weekend fishing trip.
99.9% of the time…
• …following the incident, filling out the
reflection sheet, and serving/experiencing
the consequences of your actions, you will
have the opportunity to repair the harm you
caused and to mend the relationship that
you damaged by performing a service to our
school through our restorative justice
process.
In the end…
• Treat people the way you want to be treated.
• Greet people in the halls when you see them
or if they say hi to you first.
• Smile.
• Say please and thank you.
…and above all else, remember
why you are here:
• …to learn.
• …to grow.
• …to create positive opportunities for
yourself, your friends and your family.
• …and, oh yes, to have a little fun along the
way.
At this point…
• …the code of conduct presentation is
complete!
• The final step is to sign off as having
viewed it with your home base advisor
immediately following the presentation.
Have an amazing year!
• It is your responsibility to know and follow
the rules covered by the presentation and
outlined in your planner. If you have any
questions regarding our behavior policy,
you can see it in its entirety in your
planners, on the district web page at
www.hopkinsschools.org under the policies
link, or feel free to ask Ms. Melville or Mr.
Kusch!
