Program Overview & Grant Requirements Overview Community POWER Grantee Orientation September 11, 2012 SWMCB Overview Joint powers board formed in 1990 − Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington Counties − Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) SWMCB staff − County staff − Richardson, Richter and Associates (RRA) SWMCB Mission To increase the efficiency and environmental effectiveness of the region's solid waste management system. Community POWER Partners on Waste Education and Reduction SWMCB created Community POWER in 2001 Partner with local community groups to engage local residents in waste and toxicity reduction messages and activities. Traditional vs. Mini Grants • New this year…two levels of grants. • Goal: To educate and actively engage residents to recycle and reuse more, reduce waste and toxicity, compost yard and food waste, and plan green events. Behavior change model • • • • Help your audience make meaningful and long-lasting behavior changes. Community-based social marketing Revising the behavior change tool— Need volunteers to help evaluate. Appropriate language includes: Funding for this project was provided by the Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board through Community POWER: Partners on Waste Education and Reduction. Press release template • Promote your efforts • Let us know if you are in the news Grant Activities Timeline Contract duration Aug 27, 2012 to Aug 23, 2013 Grant activities begin Aug 27, 2012. – Staff time and expenses may NOT be charged to the grant prior to Aug 27. Individual grantee meetings (required): Will be scheduled by County staff Grantee fall training: November 15, time TBD Reporting Requirements • Progress reports: March 6, 2013 • Traditional grantees only • Final reports: Sept. 12, 2013 • Mini grantees may submit at anytime before. Expectations • Attend orientation, training and final meeting. • Get approval of changes in advance. • Help spread the word about waste reduction & recycling. • Use pre-approved language. • If creating resources, get input from county staff.
