Progress on FLITE 2005/06 Initiatives
FLITE 2005/06 Initiatives – Learning-Centered University
 Launched or substantially enhanced access to digital and
conventional library materials (MeLCat patron-initiated
interlibrary loan, state-wide courier delivery service, SFX full-text
database integration).
 Continued serials subscription conversion from microform to
digital.
 Expanded test group for e-Reserve program rollout.
 Offered application and tech-oriented professional development
sessions (FLITEC and InFLITE) to increase FLITE faculty and
staff competencies.

database
FLITE 2005/06 Initiatives – Work Together
 Completed merger of Reference and Instruction and Circulation
Services departments to form a new Public Services
department.
 Concluded FLITE CTA position audits, resulting in rewritten CTA
job descriptions and upgrade of eleven positions, resolving
salary inequities between FLITE employees and those working
in other campus units.
 Continued internal policy, procedure, and work process
documentation effort; presently adding content to FLITE’s
intranet.
 Launched a substantial Media Production advertising effort to
promote services; completed a work order tracking program to
monitor outcomes.
 Provided ongoing training spaces in FLITE to support the
Banner Project.
FLITE 2005/06 Initiatives – Create an Engaged Campus
 Continued development of W.N. Ferris website to support FSUS
program.
 Installed software and hardware to create the Ferris Institutional
Repository (FIR) which will eventually provide perpetual storage
space for valuable digital materials created by and about the
University community.
 Concluded hosting agreements for the Michigan Health Science
Librarians Assn. archives and increased acquisition of local
history materials.
 Followed long-standing commitment to provide space for on and
off-campus organization meetings and conferences.
Unit Action Plan Submission 2006/2007
General
 In support of Grants and External Contracts Task Force, FLITE will
upgrade its single-user license for the digital Foundation Directory
to a campus-wide license. Investigate feasibility of hosting a
Foundation Center Cooperating Collection.
 Develop plans to maintain integrity of FLITE’s electronic
functionality in light of IT support changes proposed by ATS and
TAC.
 Evaluate and plan for FLITE space utilization to address the
issues of
Shelving that was expected to last until 2016 is now 90% full
Repurposing space freed by FCTL and TAC departures to
support FLITE service expansion
Library Systems and Operations (LSO)
 Activate interdepartmental partnerships between LSO and Public
Services to promote the use of new books, including showcasing of
new titles, adding cover art and tables of contents to online catalog,
and reinstating a monthly New Books list on the library web site with
links to catalog records, cover art, etc.
 Evaluate means of enhancing access to print periodicals, including
shelving arrangements.
 Launch pilot project over the next year to provide access to 27,000
academic, electronic books from ebrary.
Media Production
 Continue Media Production’s support of classroom instruction by
promoting use and expansion of their customized services.
 Continue outreach through “Media Production On the Road” exhibit
to each of the colleges; continue to be proactive in soliciting and
guiding projects, and continue to present at prominent events such
as Faculty Week, New Faculty Orientation, and Topics in Teaching
sessions.
 Continue to help support student recruitment through the design,
production, and distribution of marketing materials.
Public Services
 Continue assessment efforts, particularly with regard to library
instruction and reference services.
 Expand existing training activities to include reference-related training
for library assistants and part-time staff.
 Create and/or review and revise FLITE copyright guidelines and
procedures to govern electronic reserves, traditional reserves,
interlibrary loan, etc.; these should be tied to the university’s
copyright policy.
 Implement ILLiad interlibrary loan software to increase efficiency,
reduce processing time, and gather data.
Special Collections
 In view of many upcoming faculty retirements, launch a directed
solicitation effort to encourage the donation of personal papers to the
Archives. Coordinate effort with colleges and the emeriti
association.
 Complete transition following retirement of Ray Dickinson and
assignment of Paul Kammerdiner as Government Documents
Librarian.
