• Parents/Students/Staff/Community: Treat them as equals
regarding information access.
• There is no power in position. There is only power in
information—be specific, precise, correct, and accessible.
• Provide timely information through identifiable sources and
outlets:

Schedules

Problems: Listen, Listen, Listen
• Timing is everything: Identify and move towards the problems and
solutions as soon as possible
• Own the problem and the outcome… especially if a mistake has been
made
• Give reasons, but avoid excuses…provide a timely solution, but be
patient
• Under promise—over deliver
The final decision MUST rest with you
I was once told, “Jim you don’t get paid for the easy decisions, you get paid
for the tough ones.”
Above everything else make sure they know YOU CARE about the students
People don’t care what you know unless they know that you care.
Provide a Forum for Feedback
• Each group will bring their own set of values
and expectations to an issue.
• Community members will require thoughtful
responses, so be willing to say “I don’t know,
but I will find out and get back to you.”

The Staff Member Stakeholder
• They want an honest response to their issues –
Don’t placate them, listen and be honest about the
limits of your resources.
• Get out in front of concerns before they become
major issues. Let people know you have a plan.
• Avoid making promises to create calm…give
yourself time to be thoughtful
Come Prepared
• Do your homework before you meet with any
stakeholder group.
• Tell the truth within the limits of the
information you are able to provide, politics
not withstanding
• Know enough to be specific, but still be open
to new information or concerns
