Asha Rajvanshi Professor and Head, EIA Cell, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun Green Development is development practice wherein modernization-oriented approaches are systematically relegated to a role which is secondary to ecologically-oriented practices Green Development is primarily concerned with encouraging ecological and environmental sustainability in mainstream development practice Objectives of ‘global green new deal' Make a major contribution to reviving the world economy through ‘green thinking’, saving and creating jobs, and protecting vulnerable groups Reduce carbon dependency and ecosystem degradation, putting economies on a path to clean and stable development; and Further sustainable and inclusive growth, achievement of the MDGs, and end extreme poverty by 2015. How to promote the green development ? GREENING • Policies • Economics • Technology • Production • Energy generation • Construction and infrastructure What are Green Policies? Policies that promote "green" standards and practices into all aspects of business to control and direct economic growth in such a way as to lessen pressures on material resources and on the conditions of the living world around us. Such policies will place demand on: materials efficiency, energy efficiency and waste management. When is economics truly “Green”? Finite resources treated as natural capital. Renewable resources conserved. Production made cyclical, not linear. The economy built on a firm ecological foundation. The market guided by the needs of the environment. When are Technologies Truly “Green”? • Reduced Non-Renewable Energy Use • Increased Renewable Energy Use • More “energy efficient” • Less Wasteful • More Recycling …Wise Energy Use …Mimic EcoSystems When are productions truly green? • Products designed for long life and efficiency. • All materials used in product manufacture are capable of being recycled • The processes of manufacture and distribution economises on resources. • All wastes produced from manufacture are capable of being absorbed benignly by the surrounding natural systems. • Where carbon dioxide cannot economically be recaptured, companies encourage planting of forests which will absorb an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide What is Green construction? Creating structures while ensuring processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a life-cycle (from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction) Green infrastructures are aimed at promoting access and connectivity; function sustainably across different spatial areas; be planned strategically and holistically; support diverse ecological, economic and social needs; and promote a more holistic approach to landscape management. Green development also includes climate change proofing! Other Perceptions?
