QUICK ADDITION TO NOTES (WRITE TERMS IN BOLD)
Rise of Lutheranism: Lutheranism was the first Protestant faith.
After his excommunication, Lutheranism spread rapidly, because he
was supported by influential German princes of the HRE. Luther
grew closer to the princes and lords over time.
Charles: V or I; HRE, Catholic, and King of Spain. Charles was
distracted by outside crises while the Lutheran German princes grew
strong. (Some princes were Lutheran as a way to assert their own
sovereignty.)
Peace of Augsburg: Signed by Charles and the princes in 1555.
This allowed Christianity to be formally divided in Germany.
German rulers could now choose to have their state/people be
either Catholic or Lutheran.
ACTIVITY TIME!
1. In groups of four (no more), you will read 395-398 (stopping
before Anabaptists). I recommend you take turns reading aloud.
2. Define Zwingli, Calvin, and predestination in notes individually.
Keep these.
3. Write four review questions as a group. These questions must
begin with “how” or “why.” Include answers. Turn in one copy with
all group members’ names.

1 question over Calvinism
1 question over Reformation in England
