Instructions for this activity
• This activity can be done with one or more students that may or may not
have difficulty identifying the sounds in words.
• Show the student(s) the slides. Have them guess the missing word and
identify the missing vowel sounds aloud. They can work in pairs and
write the team response on a white board.
• Take time to model correct speech especially if you notice a child is
having difficulty.
• Use the primary sources as conversation pieces to get the students to
use the word orally in sentence form.
• Have them say and answer the questions at the bottom of the slide. If a
child has major difficulty reading the teacher may have to model it for
them.
• Print the photos and have students sort them into 2 categories (long and
short vowels).
• Print the words for more advanced readers to sort.
• Continue through the slide show repeating the steps above.
• Each image is hyperlinked to the LOC’s bibliographic page. Here you
can find more information about each image.
• Additional presentations could be created for other vowel or consonant
sounds. This version was modeled after Jeanne Seabridge’s lesson.
