MFL Presentation
Why study a language?
Why study a language at GCSE?
• The government have introduced the English
Baccalaureate which means…
• it’s for you if you are thinking of going to
university AND you are capable of getting
Grade C or above in the 5 core subjects –
English, Maths, Science, History/Geography
and a Language
you will be competing for university places
with people of your ability who will have the E
Bac – so you need to have it too.
• many of the best universities are already
expecting students to have a language at
GCSE when they are looking at applications!
•
THE GCSE LANGUAGES COURSE
• The GCSE Course in French and German
is made up of four Units…
• LISTENING
• READING
• SPEAKING
• WRITING....
• ......just like in KS3
LISTENING
Unit 1: Listening
Examination – 20%
Either
Foundation Tier: 30
minutes
(+ 5 minutes reading
time)
or
Higher Tier: 40
minutes
(+ 5 minutes reading
time)
• This is done as a
final exam at the
end of Year 11
READING
Unit 2: Reading
Examination – 20%
Either
Foundation Tier: 30
minutes
or
Higher Tier: 40
minutes
• This is done as a
final exam at the
end of Year 11
SPEAKING
Unit 3: Speaking
Controlled
Assessment – 30%
(internally assessed)
Two tasks submitted
for
moderation
• Speaking is assessed
over the two years. It
is done in school and
marked by your teacher.
• You do it when you are
ready.
• You have control over it
and…..
• IT IS WORTH 30% OF
YOUR FINAL GRADE!
WRITING
Unit 4: Writing
Controlled
Assessment – 30%
(externally
assessed)
Two tasks submitted
for
marking
• Each piece of writing is
done as a ‘mini exam’
after you have prepared
the topic with your
Teacher.
• It is sent away to be
marked.
• You only have to write
about two sides for
each task!
• You have control over it,
and……
• IT IS WORTH 30% OF
YOUR FINAL GRADE!
HOW EASY IS THAT?
• You will have completed 60% of your grade by the
time you get to the exams in Year 11.
• You know exactly what you have to do for this
60% - you therefore have control over your
marks!
• Only 40% is unknown – 2 short exams at the end
of Year 11!
• However..... for the Speaking and Writing
Controlled Assessment Tasks you MUST be
prepared to spend time on LEARNING, as this is
the only way you will know your work to get you
your grade!
