JRA1 Standards Development
BODC leading with contributions from Technical Task Team
(TTT)
Main Objective: Define and develop common standards for
Communications and interoperability of the distributed platforms
Metadata and data exchange
Checking of data quality
Standards are crucial to the success of SeaDataNet
A prerequisite for all other SeaDataNet activities
JRA1 Standards Development
The work package consists of
JRA 1.1 Co-ordination and delivery of reference
documents
JRA 1.2 Common data management protocol
JRA 1.3 Common vocabularies and ontologies
JRA 1.4 Common transport and service protocols
JRA 1.5 Content standards and profiles
JRA 1.6 Links and dissemination to international
authorities
JRA1.1 Co-ordination and delivery of
reference documents
Make available on
SeaDataNet extranet
(www.seadatanet.org)
Extranet developed and
managed by IFREMER
Proper documentation
management (BSCW)
Includes version control
List server for group
mailings
Extranet deployment on
schedule
JRA1.2 Definition of a common tagging system
Unique identification of each data set
Definition must support duplicate data sets
Data centres involved in joint projects may hold the same
data set
“Duplicates” may differ because of different data policies
Duplicates should be clear to end user
Details of how to do this currently being explored
by the Technical Task Team
Deliverables:
Beta tagging/identification system (Dec 06)
Validated tagging/identification system (Feb 07)
JRA 1.3 Common vocabularies and ontologies
Started in SEASEARCH II as the Common Data Interface (CDI)
libraries
Terminology: Libraries now referred to as Controlled
Vocabularies
SeaDataNet will develop these much further
TTT subgroup will be responsible for the content governance.
BODC to provide the technical governance for SeaDataNet
Delivered by “Web Services” (driven by Roy Lowry and NERC
Data Grid)
Called by software agents and web applications
Allow community to query the vocabulary master copy directly
Support retrieval of both full or subsets of vocabulary lists
Centrally managed by BODC
JRA 1.3 Common vocabularies and ontologies
Example of a Web Service

JRA 1.3 Common vocabularies and ontologies
Ontologies
Sophisticated mapping between vocabularies
incorporating relationships
Initial development for parameter discovery vocabularies
(BODC, CF, GCMD)
Delivered through a Web Service
Deliverables
Beta common vocabularies and ontology (Oct 06)
Current status
Vocabulary technical governance in place
Beta Web Services under test at BODC
JRA 1.4 Common transport and service protocols
SeaDataNet Version 1
NetCDF content model and ASCII exchange
format
Standard Controlled Vocabularies to describe
content
SeaDataNet Version 2
Data virtualisation using OGC and W3C
standards
JRA 1.5 Content standards and profiles
SeaDataNet Family of Directories
CDI
EDMED
EDIOS
CSR
EDMERP
XML schemas to be developed for metadata directories
EDMED
(NA5, all TAs and JRA2)
EDIOS
(NA5, all TAs and JRA2)
CSR
(NA4, all TAs and JRA2)
EDMERP
(NA7,all TAs and JRA2)
CDI
(NA6,all TAs and JRA2)
JRA 1.5 Content standards and profiles
Data models and storage structures to be improved by
Vocabulary harmonisation
Enhanced data structures
Improved procedures
XML schemas to be improved by
Proper governance
Better integration
Based on ISO19115 and perhaps ISO19139 ?
ISO 19115 – Content model
ISO 19139 – XML schema – ties things down. Now publicly
available
Deliverables
Beta XML metadata directory schemas (Sep 06)
Validated XML metadata directory schemas (Feb 07)
In conjunction with MarineXML (driven by Roy Lowry, BODC)
JRA 1.6 Links and dissemination to international
authorities
Standards, technologies and products to be made
available to international marine community,
including:
IOC and MarineXML
GEOSS, Marine Metadata Interoperability (MMI)
Operational community (GOOS, EuroGOOS,
IOOS/DMAC)
Planned dissemination mechanisms:
Conferences
Workshops
Training
Publications
