Introducing the research into Future skills
needs of the Chemical Sector with
reference to the Green Economy

skills in their sectors

• Result of extensive research and stakeholder engagements
• For meaningful skills planning, engages with policies and
legislations most relevant to skills development and the chemical
sector
• Highlighted green economy to be an imperative for the CHIETA
CHIETA support to research
• Supported the research via the Discretionary Grants
• Set-up a Steering Committee in KZN region as a
reference group to the research
Key questions
• How does the ‘Green’ agenda affect the Chemical Sector?
• What impact is it likely to have on future industry / market
trends?
• What implication is it expected to have on the skills
requirements/components of present jobs?
• What new jobs / roles is the ‘Green’ agenda likely to create
in the Chemical Sector?
• What is expected to be the extent of such skills needs?
Objectives of the study
Overall objective: To identify the future skill needs of the
Chemicals Sector with reference to the Green Economy.
Sub-objectives:
1. To determine the nature of changes likely to impact the
Chemical Sector due to the Green Economy.
2. To determine how skill needs of present jobs will change
due to the Green Economy
3. To determine new skills required for future jobs.
4. To estimate the extent of such new skills required in the
future
How CHIETA aims to use study
• Lay the basis for stakeholder engagements on
green skills – within and beyond sector
• Feed into Sector Skills Plan Update processes and
strategic plan
• Basis for the development of an implementation
plan on green skills in the sector
• Feed into update of chemical sector
occupational profiles ( CHIETA Occupational
dictionary)
• Inform CHIETA submission to DHET on OFO
update
• Possibly identify further research needs

• Kept Chambers up-to-date with the progress of
the project
• Today finally presenting content and providing a
chance to engage with the content and provide
input
