• We will occasionally inventory students’ supplies and let you know what supplies are low.

• Please only send money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and what the money is for (lunch, field trip, etc.)

Reading

• Colorado Common Core Standards • “Reading Streets” • Focus on critical thinking skills (comparing texts, authors, etc.) • Small Group Instruction • Flexible grouping • 5 components of Literacy – Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension • Additional support for students

Writing

• Strong focus this year due to last year’s TCAP scores.

• Colorado Common Core Standards • Summaries • Paragraph writing • Narrative and Expository writing • Research • Spelling, punctuation and grammar need to be correct in all writing.

Social Studies

• Colorado Content Standards – Geography – History – Economics – Civics • Colorado Springs History • “Social Studies Alive!” • This year is a great year for your family to see some of Colorado Springs’ wonderful attractions!

Science

• Colorado Content Standards • Science Kits for hands-on learning – Earth Science – Rocks and Minerals – Life Science – Plants – Physical Science – Solids, Liquids and Gases

Assessments

• DIBELS – Ongoing throughout the year • CMAS state testing (formerly TCAP) – late in the year • MAP – Measures of Academic Progress – Computer based assessment – Fall, Winter and Spring • Reading, Writing, Math, and Science Assessments – End of each unit

Field Trips & Activities

• Possible Field Trips this year: – Pioneers’ Museum & McAllister House – Mining Museum – Manitou Cliff Dwellings – Glen Eyrie – Rock Ledge Ranch – If you are interested in joining us on field trips or for classroom activities, please leave your name and number with your child’s teacher.

– Homework written daily – Notes to teacher if necessary • You can also e-mail or call with questions – Read 30 minutes every day • Including weekends and holidays – Practice Math facts 5 minutes every day • Flash cards • They can do Jiji or xtramath.com as this practice if you have a computer available.
