Paradigms and Principles
pp. 11-28
Paradigms
• What is a paradigm?
A paradigm is a way of looking at life, a point
of view, a frame of reference, or a guiding
belief.
Paradigms are like glasses. They affect the
way we “see” things.
Seeing correctly is important to being
effective.
The Son of King Louis XVI
• Although severely
tempted to do many
dishonorable things as a
young person, he did
not give in. His
response: “I cannot do
what you ask for I was
born to be a king.” (his
self paradigm/compare
with Meagan from
Vancouver, B.C.)
PARADIGM SHIFT
• A paradigm shift
happens when I see
things in a new light.
• My point of view
changes.
• Examples Cross country
 VW bus breakdown
The cookie story—A Paradigm Shift
• Sitting at the airport with a cup of coffee and a
small package of cookies.
• Someone sitting next to me starts eating my
cookies.
• I get mad, but don’t say anything.
• Later, when I open my purse, I find my
package of cookies.
• I had been eating his cookies! He had not said
anything to me.

If who I am is what I have and what
I have is lost, then who am I?
Putting principles first is the key
to doing better in all the other
centers. Make principles your
life-center or paradigm.
The two brothers
• Two brothers were fighting in the same
company in France.
• One was shot by the enemy and the other
escaped.
• The one who escaped wanted to go back for
his brother who had been shot.
• His commanding officer said, “He is probably
dead. There is no point going back for him
and risking your life.”
The Principle of Loyalty
• Just as the soldier
reached safety with his
brother on his
shoulders, his brother
died.
• “You risked your life for
nothing.”
• “No, I did what he
expected me to do, and
I have my reward.”
Be aware of your paradigms!
