Transcript What is a paradigm ?

Imagination is more
important than
knowledge.

Think Outside the BOX!
Paradigm…
What is a paradigm ?
A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and
practices that constitutes a way of
viewing reality.
It’s the way we see the world and it’s
sometimes difficult to overcome those
perceptions …
Are paradigms good or bad?
It Depends…
Paradigms are good because they allow us
to anticipate the future
Cause and effect
Paradigms may not good because they can
cause us to make inferences, while not
being able to see the whole picture
Paradigm Effect
Paradigms filter incoming data
so that:
You can see what you need to see
effectively and efficiently
But, you might fail to correctly interpret
data and come to the right conclusion
Paradigms filter cont…
You may unconsciously distort data to fit
your paradigm
You are blinded and confined by your
own paradigm
Yet, you are convinced that you are right
What is a Paradigm Shift?
A paradigm shift is a
REVOLUTIONARY way of thinking
about old problem…
A dramatic change in our perception
Paradigm Shifters
Galileo
Earth revolves around Sun
Alexander Graham Bell
Telephone
Charles Goodyear
Vulcanized Rubber
George Eastman
Celluloid Photography
G. Washington Carver
Use of Peanuts
Chester Carlson
Xerox Machine
Edwin Land
Polaroid Camera
Jack Kilby
Integrated Electronic Circuits
When the RULES change new
trends are created
Science knowledge is not staticit changes constantly so the
process must change too
Influence understanding: to
understand what influences your
perceptions
Divergent thinking: thinking skills to
discover more than one answer
Convergent thinking: thinking skills
to focus integrated data and choices
Mapping: drawing pathways to move
from the present to the future
Imaging: to imagine words, drawings,
or models of the future
GOING BACK TO ZERO
...as a result of the paradigm shift, the
traditional way of doing business or
science can become obsolete or
irrelevant
GOING BACK TO ZERO RULE:
When a paradigm shifts, everything goes
back to zero. Your past success
guarantees nothing
The Role of the Paradigm Pioneer
The paradigm pioneer is an individual who,
without waiting for someone else to fill in
all the details, realizes the importance of the
opportunity and develops it
The pioneer's pathway is one of intuition
and courage; This path, by its very nature,
may be extremely risky
Innovation vs Pioneering
United States…
Best at creating new paradigms
But Americans are not developing
these new ideas because
investors tend to be too cautious
or investing in other countries
Ask yourself a paradigm
opportunity question:
What is impossible today that
might be accomplished with a
new paradigm?
How do you become a
paradigm pioneer?
Get outside your borders, comfort zone
Break your own rules of past success
Develop new reading habits
Be ready for failure
Listen! Listen! Listen!
To raise new questions, new
possibilities, to regard old
problems from a new angle,
requires creative imagination
and marks real advance in
science.
