LANCE catalog
Hannibal-LaGrange Main Page
To access the library’s homepage, you will need to start at Hannibal-LaGrange
College’s main page, which is located at http://www.hlg.edu
To get to the library’s homepage, look towards the top of the screen at the right
side of the red menu bar. Locate the link labeled library.
After locating the Library link on the Hannibal-LaGrange main page, a menu will
appear as shown above. Click on “Library Home” in the menu to go directly to the
library homepage.
On the library homepage draw your attention to the left side of the page. Notice the
column of links listed under “L.A. Foster Library Links” and locate the link called
“Catalog”. To search the LANCE catalog click this link.
To search the LANCE catalog, click the link labeled “Lance Cluster Catalog” located
in the middle of the page.
On the LANCE catalog home page you can conduct a quick or guided search or view
your library account.
The first drop down menu is where you will select the catalog to search. If you
select a specific school you will only search the resources located at that school.
For example, if you select Hannibal-LaGrange , you will only search resources that
are at Hannibal-LaGrange. The first choice, LANCE catalog, will search the catalogs
of all schools in the LANCE cluster.
The second drop down menu is where you will select how you want to search.
There are many different options. Keyword, title and author are at the top of the
list as they are the most frequently used.
Next you will enter your search terms. For this example search we will use the
word “library” in a keyword search in the LANCE catalog. Once you have entered
the search term click on the search button.
This is how your results will look. On the top of the page there are two rows of
buttons. Please draw your attention to the button labeled extended display. By
clicking this button you change the way in which the media results are displayed.
As you can see, more information for each resource is now displayed. You are able
to see which library owns each item. For the purpose of this tutorial let’s look at
item number 4, which is a book owned by Truman State University. Click on the
title of the resource to go to the resource’s record.
This page shows you an individual record of a resource. This page will show the
location, call number and status of an item. The status may have a due date, which
means that the item is checked out. It may also say for library use only, which
means that the item may only be used in the library and that it may not be checked
out. Because this book is not owned by Hannibal-LaGrange, it will have to be
requested through the LANCE system.
At the top of the page you will see two rows of buttons. Please draw your attention
to the button in the top row that says request. By clicking this button, you will start
the process of requesting this book.
To request a book you must enter your name, campus ID number and a PIN. Your
campus ID number is the number located on your student ID card. You must enter
all the letters and numbers, including your campus code on the end of the ID
number. Next you must create a PIN. This will be done either the first time you
access your library account online or the first time you request a book through
LANCE. Next, you must choose your pick up location.
Special instructions and cancel date are optional items. Once you have completed
the request form click the submit button at the bottom of the page.
If your request was successful, you will see this screen. Once your book arrives at
the library you designated as your pick up location, the library staff will either
email, call or send a notice in the mail to let you know your book has arrived. If you
click on the “regular display” button, you will go back to the last item you looked at.
In this case you would go back to the book that was just requested. You will notice
that under status it now says “1 hold”. This is because of the request that was just
made for the book. Now turn your attention to the top row of buttons. Locate the
one that says “return to browse”. When you click on this button it will take you
back to the original list of resources for the word “library”.
Sometimes you may want to narrow your search to retrieve fewer resources. You
can do this by clicking the “modify search” button.
From this screen you can do many things to narrow your search.
Language limits your search to resources only in a particular language such as
English or Spanish. The search and sort option allows you to sort your list of
resources by publication date, title or the item’s relevance to the original topic. In
the middle of the screen, you will see a drop down menu labeled material format.
This feature allows you to limit your search to the types of resources you want.
You may also limit your search to a particular publisher. The last option is to use
the year of publication boxes to limit the search to certain years by copyright date.
After performing the search with all the limits in place, this is what your list will
look like. Before limiting the search there were around 32,000 resources listed
and now it is narrowed down to 14 resources using the limiters. If you can not
find what you need using the LANCE catalog you can search the MOBIUS catalog
from this page by clicking on the “search MOBIUS” button. For more information
on searching MOBIUS catalog please see the MOBIUS tutorial.
