Types of Competitions
1. Knockouts: In the knockout contest only the winner progresses and
the loser is eliminated. Often used for individual sports e.g. Tennis,
squash
Advantages
• Simplest to organise
• Can do with limited organisers
• Can be finished quickly
• Champion sometimes
unpredictable
Disadvantages
• Does not promote participation
• Places emphasis on victory
• Not flexible for participants
2. Round Robin: Involve a team playing all the other teams in their
competition at least once. The winner of the competition can be decided
by the team with the most points at the end of the final round.
E.g.. Rugby League, AFL
Advantages:
• More participation
• Fairer way of determining
the champion
• Allows teams to lose a
game and still be the
champion
Disadvantages:
• Takes a long time
• More facilities needed
• Hard to organise with a
large number of teams
involved
3. Pools: Involves teams in a series of pools playing only the teams in
their pool once each The team or two with the highest points score
progress to play-offs. E.g. Basketball, Rugby Union
Wold Cup, Soccer world cup, NBA basketball
Advantages
• Allows the contest to be
completed in far less time than
a round robbin
• Still allows games to
participate in several games
even if they lose often
Disadvantages
• Requires several fields/courts
• Not all teams play eachother
4. Tabloid Sports: Uses many different events with competitors in
teams moving between each event. Teams score points for each event
and an overall point score is kept. E.g. Decathlon, Heptathlon,
Pentathlon, children’s mini-Olympics
Advantages
• Focus on fun and participation
• Many different sports and skills
• Team tabloids promote teamwork
Disadvantages
• Teams with poor team work perform
badly
• Needs many helpers
• Needs to be highly coordinated
