Presence of Media During
Recruiting Contact
Not permissible for a media entity to be present
during any recruiting contact made by an
institution's coaching staff member.

Comments Prior to Signing
• A member institution may only confirm PSA’s
recruitment.
• No comments regarding PSA’s ability or
contribution to team.

• May not arrange for the publicity of a PSA’s
visit.

An institution may not introduce a visiting PSA

the media.

An institution may take a picture of a prospect
during a campus visit to be used in the
institution’s permissible publicity and
promotional activities (e.g., press release,
media guide).

Tryouts
The Basics
• Tryouts permissible beginning June 15
immediately preceding the PSA’s junior year
in high school.
• May only occur on campus or at a site where
the institution normally conducts practice or
competition.

One Tryout Limitation
One tryout per PSA per institution per sport.
• If adopted, NCAA Division II Proposal No. 2015-4
would permit one tryout while SA is in high
school and one tryout after September 1
following high school graduation.

Outside PSA’s high school's or preparatory
school's traditional season in the sport.
• Begins - first official team practice; and
• Concludes - team's final competition.

The tryout legislation is sport specific.
• Example: A basketball prospective studentathlete would be permitted to participate in a
basketball tryout after the season has ended
even if he is in season for track and field.

• Not permissible to conduct a tryout of a PSA who is
required to repeat the sophomore year of high
school.
• If a PSA is still competing June 15 immediately
preceding his or her junior year in high school, the
earliest the PSA may participate in a tryout in that
sport is after the PSA’s season is complete.

What is a camp/clinic?
• An institution’s sports camp
or instructional clinic shall
be any camp or clinic that is
owned or operated by a
member institution or an
employee of the member
institution’s athletics
department, either on or off
its campus.

• The individual is at least a
majority owner (51 percent
of the camp or clinic).
• The individual is personally
and directly responsible for
the management and
operation of the camp or
clinic.

Advertising
 May provide an institutional camp brochure
to a prospect at any time.
 May provide an institutional camp brochure
in an electronic format.

Advertising
A prospective student-athlete’s photograph
may be used in an institution's camp promotion
provided the photos are part of an action shot
(e.g., candid), there is not focus on one
prospective student-athlete and the photos are
not staged.

Admission
 It is not permissible to provide a prospect with free
or reduced admission.
Bylaw 12.5.1.5.1
 Discounted admission may be provided if based on
objective criteria.
Example: registration prior to a specific date, online
registration, attendance at multiple sessions .

Employment
An institution may employ a prospect that:
 Has signed an NLI or written offer of admission or
financial aid at the institution; or
 Has not signed an NLI or written offer of
admission or financial aid at ANY institution.
*Please note that certain conditions apply.
