Spanish Exploration
The competition for wealth in Asia among
European nations prompted Christopher Columbus
to make a daring voyage from Spain in 1492.
Instead of sailing south around Africa and then
east, Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic in
search of an alternate trade route to Asia and its
riches. Instead of arriving in Asia, he stepped onto
an island in the Caribbean. The Europeans would
bring many dangers with them to the new world
that the natives had not yet been exposed to, such
as diseases…
• How come the Native Americans would catch/die from European
diseases, but not the Europeans?
Map of the World
