Prevention of Sexually Transmitted
Diseases in Puerto Rico

Background


The Committee was created to accomplish
2005 IPP Project objectives.
Due to 80% of chlamydia and syphilis
infections are concentrated between youth
15 to 29 years old, we recognized the
necessity to incorporate organizations
and/or institutions which works with young
people as Health Care providers,
Universities, and Department of Education
between others.
Development



Representatives of Public Health School, Family
Planning, Community Based Organization,
Health Management Organization and others,
were invited to join the first meeting on October
19, 2005.
We offered a brief report of IPP and invited
them to join the Committee
After two successive work meetings (November
14th and December 7th) the PR STD Prevention
Planning Committee was formed.

Purposes

To provide counseling, promotion and
increase STD testing principally,
chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis,
targeted to high STD risk population in PR.
Activities

Collaborative Agreement with PR Medical
Technologist Board to perform STD/HIV
screening activities around the Island.


HIV testing in Inter-Universities Games on April 28 at
El Tuque, Ponce
Collaborative Agreement with University of
Puerto Rico to perform STD educational and
screening activities to university population.
Chlamydia poster distribution to all Campuses
 Chlamydia/gonorrhea and syphilis screening at
Mayaguez, Bayamon and Rio Piedras Campuses on
April 27th.

Activities

Collaborative Agreement with PR Department of
Education to perform educative activities and
chlamydia/gonorrhea/syphilis screening on High
School students.

Efforts





A STD epidemiologic profile was presented to Superintendents and
Directors of all Educative Regions of PR Department of Education.
San Juan, Ponce and Bayamon were the municipalities with the
highest incidence of STD’s between the group of 13 to 24 years old.
Schools will be selected based on this epidemiologic indicator.
From May to August will be developed a protocol and a work plan for
implement it to selected schools.
A Press Conference about this collaborative agreement will be done
on August 16
Screening and Educative activities will begin on September 2006.
