Reading & Writing
14강 세부 내용 파악
Example (p.88)
• Boethius was born in Rome around 480
AD, the son of a noble family.
• He was well-educated and could speak
both Greek and Latin.
• Boethius acquired an important post
under the Ostrogoth king Theodoric.
• For a time he enjoyed power and
influence.
• But he began to fall after 520.
• He was sent to prison and put to death
after terrible tortures.
• While in prison, he wrote his famous
book The Consolation of Philosophy.
• Around 510 he began the major work of
his life: the translation of the works of
Aristotle from Greek into Latin.
• However, instead of translating all the
works of Aristotle, he translated only The
Organon, or works on logic.
• These translations were used in schools
for more than seven hundred years and
made Boethius’s name admired.

Exercise 1 (p.90)
• Chile stretches more than 2,600 miles
from north to south but averages only 100
miles in width.
• It is cold and rainy in the south and hot
and dry in the north.
• In parts of the Atacama Desert no rainfall
has ever been recorded.
• Although harsh, this region attracts
settlers because of its rich mineral
deposits.
• The central Valley lies between the Andes
and a range of coastal moutains.
• The soil is fertile, and the climate is mild.
• Over two-thirds of the population live in
this region, mainly in the cities of
Santiago and Valparaiso.
• Three-fourths of Chile’s industry is also
located here, as are most of the rich farms.
• Chile claims parts of Antarctica but this is
not recognized internationally.
Exercise 1 -어휘(p.90)
• Range 범위, 한도, 산맥
Exercise 2 (p.91)
• Felicity Maxwell founded a successful
American business making and
distributing snowmobiles in 2010.
• Americans use snowmobiles primarily for
leisure, while his product is designed as a
working vehicle.
• That’s why there is little domestic
demand for his snowmobiles.
• Instead, nearly all of his products are
exported overseas.
• His company employs most of the
workers in its community.
• Because his workers spend about 60% of
their income locally, Maxwell’s payroll is
responsible for about $20 million of
annual income in the community.
• Without the economic gains from
Maxwell’s employees, local businesses
such as grocery stores, hair salons,
restaurants, gas stations and so on would
not survive.
• For that reason, local businessmen are
thankful for Maxwell and his employees.

Exercise 3 (p.92)
• Tufted puffins breed on islands and rocky
cliffs in the Arctic waters of the North
Pacific, which includes the Arctic, Bering,
and Okhotsk seas.
• They are the size of pigeons, but weigh
nearly twice as much.
• In flight they look like flying cigars,
moving very quickly close to the water.
• They feed by diving, then flying under
water with their wings in pursuit of small
fish.
• They hold the fish in their bills until they
return to the nest to feed the puffin chicks.
• They breed in holes they dig into the
ground and build their nests.
• Puffin chicks come out only when they
are ready to fly.
• Before then they never see the light or go
outside.
• Tufted puffins breed in colonies, some
with only a few nests and some very large.

Exercise 4 (p.93)
• Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Richland
Center, Wisconsin, on June 8, 1867.
• His mother gave him wooden blocks,
which gave him an early interest in
building things.
• Wright moved to Chicago, where he
worked for the architect Louis Sulliwan.
• In 1893 Wright opened his own office.
• When designing buildings, Wright
followed the rule that “form follows
function.”
• This means that the needs of a building’s
users should determine its structure.
• Many of Wright’s creations were
shocking to people used to more
traditional designs.
• Wright was also one of the first architects
to use concrete as the main material for
construction without disguising it under
other materials.
• By the end of Wright’s long life he had
designed building in 36 states in the U.S.
• His fame spread in Europe earlier than the
United States.
