The Effectiveness of the
Abstinence, Be faithful and
Condoms (ABC) method as a
means of HIV/AIDS Prevention
By Mike J. Chibita, Chair
ACET (U) Ltd, Board
Background
• “Who are virgins?” asks an 8-year old
• Exposure – to media, peers, etc.; and the thirst
for knowledge of children and youth
• The challenge to parents – being there, trying to
understand the basis of these questions,
clarifying things (that may not be very clear to
the parents!), getting informed and equipped

WHAT IS ABC?
• Abstinence - simply means that
sexual activity is completely cut out of
the menu
• Being faithful – sexual faithfulness
for married or co-habiting couples
• Condoms - for couples where one
spouse is positive and the other
negative; and for someone not
married and cannot abstain from sex

CONCLUSION
• ABC, in that order has worked quite
well for this country that we do not
need to reorganize the order of the
model
– Abstinence therefore has to be pushed as the default
position
– Young people, especially, need to be reminded that
they have the right and the will to say no to sex before
marriage
– There is no need to have a running battle within the
ABC model between Abstinence and Condoms. The
pecking order should be left as simple as ABC!
