CONTINUOUS &
COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION
(CCE)
The primary aim of education
is not to enable students to
do well in school, but to help
them do well in the lives
they lead outside of school.
16
STUDENTS –SKILLS REQUIRED
• Enhanced Self Esteem
• Self Confidence
• Assertiveness
• Ability to Establish Relationships
• Ability to plan and set goals
• Acquisition of Knowledge related to Specific
content areas

WHY
CONTINUOUS COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION?

External public exam is adversely affecting the teaching
learning process especially in classes IX and X.
 Academic excellence is not the only criteria for measuring
future potential or success in life.
 CCE – Continuous and Comprehensive assessment can be
used for holistic assessment of a child. CCE would include
 Scholastic
 Co-scholastic aspects
Grading which is indirect and absolute would help to reduce
stress and anxiety

what is
Formative Assessment?
What does it mean?
How does it help the teacher
and the student?
Will comprise of :
 Class work
 Homework
 Oral questions
 Quizzes
 Projects
 Assignments/Tests
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
 It refers to the assessment of the learning and
summarizes the development of learners at a particular
time.
 The test aims to summarize learning up to that point.
The test may also be used for diagnostic assessment to
identify any weaknesses and then build on that using
formative assessment.
 Summative assessment is characterized as assessment
of learning and is contrasted with formative assessment,
which is assessment for learning.
Assessment of Speaking
and Listening
• A weightage of 20 marks has been added for assessing
Speaking and Listening Skills (ASL) in classes IX and X
in the English Language in the Summative
Assessments – I and II.
• Accordingly the written paper will be of 70 marks.
• The assessment of Speaking and Listening carries 20
marks i.e. 70+20 = 90 marks in SA I and SA II
respectively.
PROBLEM
SOLVING ASSESSMENT(PSA)
It will be compulsory for all students of classes IX
and XI.
 It will comprise of 60 items of MCQ type and will carry
60 marks.
There is no specific syllabus for this test. It will assess
life skills related to the following elements:
Language conventions, Qualitative Reasoning and
Quantitative Reasoning
The items will incorporate assessment of 21st
Century skills such as Creative Thinking, Decision-making, Critical
Thinking, Problem Solving and Communication skills that lead to
greater success at higher education as well as real life situations.
 These items will be assessing students’ ability to process,
interpret and use information rather than merely assessing
students’ prior subject knowledge.
The assessment in language will contain items that will assess
grammar, usage, vocabulary in context and passage-completion.
PSA score will be counted towards FA4 which is 10% of total
assessments for class-IX. The score will be equally awarded in
one language (English or Hindi), Mathematics, Science and
Social Science.
The same score is also counted for class X FA4, though the
students may reappear for improvement of grades
Class-XI students will be issued a separate certificate for the
same.
 Class XII students also can go for an improvement of grades
obtained in Class XI
OPEN TEXT BASED
ASSESSMENT
This will be a part of Summative Assessment II to be
held in March, 2016.
Schools will be supplied with textual material in few
months before the commencement of Summative
Assessment II.
 A textual material may be in the form of an article, a
case study, a diagram, a concept/ mind map, a picture or
a cartoon, problem/situation based on the concepts
taught to be students during second term.
OPEN TEXT BASED
ASSESSMENT
The text/case-studies/supplied is thoroughly read,
discussed and analyzed by the teachers.
They get together for a brainstorming session working on
the following:
• Objectives of the Text material/Case-study
• Concepts involved
• Application of concepts to situation
OPEN TEXT BASED
ASSESSMENT
• Description and further explanation of the
case/problem
• Higher Order thinking skills involved
• Analysis with different perspectives
• Assessment techniques
• The Open Text based Assessment (OTBA) will have
questions of higher order thinking skills and some of
which may be subjective, creative and open ended.
• The textual material supplied earlier will be printed
again as part of the question paper and thus will be
available while answering the questions.
Value Based Questions
• It has been widely felt that our existing educational
ecosystem needs to be further strengthened to deliver
values enshrined in our Constitution.
• The curricula cutting across all subjects need to
articulate values in explicit terms and the assessment
schemes, at the same time, must reciprocate by
assigning a weighting to value based items.
• Continuing with its efforts in the area of value education
and in light of above framework, the Board has decided
to follow an interdisciplinary approach in value
education where values are intermingled with the content
of all the major subjects in classes IX and X .
• The Board has also decided to assess students for 5
percent weight age in each subject at the Summative
Assessment level in Classes IX and X through questions
which will be integrated with the content of the subject
and analyzed on the basis of the values it reflects.
• The questions will be for 5 marks in a question paper of
100 marks and 3-4 marks in a question paper of 70-90
marks.
• This has been effective from the Summative
Assessments-II 2012-2013 in classes IX, X.
• The Board Exam in 2016 for Classes X (Summative-II)
will also have such questions.
Summative Assessment
School Conducted
 Students of Senior
Secondary Schools
who do not wish to
move out of the CBSE
system.
 The assessment will be
done by the school
teachers of the same
school.
Board Conducted
 All the students of
Secondary Schools and
 Students of Senior
Secondary Schools, if
they wish to move out of
the CBSE system.
 The assessment will be
done by the school
teachers from outside the
school.
School Conducted/
Board Conducted
Syllabus prescribed for both
cases is same
Passing Certificate in both
cases is issued by the Board.
SIMILARITIES
IN EVALUATION
Evaluated on the basis of similar marking schemes
prepared by the Board.
 Both the school conducted and the board conducted
SA-II will be based on the question papers sent/vetted by
the Board.
 The students appearing in the School conducted SA-II
will be assessed by the schools themselves and their
answer books will be randomly verified by the Board.
 However, the students appearing in the Board
conducted SA-II will be assessed by the External
Examiners as has been the practice in the past for Board
Examinations.

Marking Scheme In School
Based Assessment
 No student would suffer because of strict marking or
benefit from lenient marking as the Marking Scheme for
all Question Papers in all major subjects would be
provided by the Board
 Teachers would be directed to adhere to the Marking
Scheme in each subject.
 However, to avoid any such apprehension the Board is
contemplating to undertake moderation of marks based
on marks distribution of the students in the school as
well as random verification by the CBSE of the
assessment done by the school.

PROMOTIONAL POLICY FOR
CLASS IX
• The year-end subject wise grades of a
student in Class IX are to be calculated on
the basis of performance in all Formative
Assessments and Summative Assessments
in scholastic areas as well as grades
obtained in co-scholastic areas.
• In scholastic areas, all the five main subjects
i.e. two languages, Mathematics,Science and
Social Science are to be considered at par for
promotion purpose.
Under Scholastic areas, Grades have been
upgraded to the next higher grade in one or
two subjects as per the total Grade Points
achieved under Co-Scholastic Areas 2(A) ,2
(B),2(C), 2(D) and Co-Curricular Activities
3(A), 3(B) as given below:
 53 to 65 Grades in two subjects of Scholastic
area are upgraded.
 40-52 grade in one subject of scholastic area
is upgraded.
 39 and above No up –gradation of Grades in
subjects of scholastic areas.
Assigning weight age to Co-scholastic areas for
Promotion purpose
• The grades in co-scholastic areas may be included in awarding
overall grade to every student as per the following procedure:
• The grades obtained in different co-scholastic areas may be
converted into grade points by using the following conversion
scale:
Grading on 5 point scale:
•
A --------------- 5
B --------------- 4
C --------------- 3
D --------------- 2
E ---------------- 1
• Total grade points earned by any student may
be calculated by adding grade points for all coscholastic areas as per the above conversion
scale.
• A student who gets A in all the categories of coscholastic areas included in the report card will
earn 65 grade points according to the above
scale.
• A star may be put on every up-scaled grade to
indicate that the final grade has been arrived
after including the achievement of the student in
co-scholastic areas.
• A footnote in this regard may be given at
appropriate place in the report card.
• The benefit of up scaling the grade in different
subjects may start from the subject in which a
student obtains lowest grade followed by next
higher grade and so on.
MODIFICATION IN THE DESIGN
OF PERFORMANCE PROFILE
• The Board has amended its examination ByeLaws to make it mandatory for students to appear
in both the Summative Assessments and score a
minimum of 25% marks in aggregate i.e. (SA I+SA
II) in these assessments w. e. f. 2013-14.
• The Board has also initiated Assessment of
Speaking and Listening Skills (ASL) and Open
Text Based Assessments (OTBA) to focus on
communicative aspects of language learning and
problems based on higher order reasoning skills.
• The grades ‘E1@’ or ‘E2@’ will indicate that
candidate has obtained less than 25% mandatory
marks in Summative Assessments.
• If mandatory 25% marks have NOT been
obtained in the Summative assessments in a
subject, Grade E1 or E2 will NOT be upgraded
GRADING SYSTEM
ADVANTAGES
 Minimize misclassification of students on the basis of
marks.
Eliminate unhealthy cut throat competition among high
achievers.
Reduce societal pressure and provide the learner with
