Diving Deep in the SCCM data!

• What is a Good Report?

3 Reports
Demo
• Count Report
• List Report
• Computer Details Report
What To Do with a Bad Report!
Just Say NO!
When a Manager Says:
• I MUST have a list of all
software installed on all PCs
–Just Say No!
• I need this report to have 50
columns
• Just Say No!
All Software for All PCs
• Assuming 80 lines of text / page
• Each page is double sided
• There are 500 sheets of paper in a bundle of
paper!
(((# of PCs) * (average # of rows within ARP)) /
80 lines ) / 2 (double sided) = total number of
pages for the report.

Let’s Do Math!

80 lines of text / page

500 sheets of paper in a bundle of paper!
My test lab has 41 PC
Ave 134 ARP entries / PC
(((41) * (134)) / 80 lines ) / 2 = 34.3 Pages
When Management Asks for a
RIDICULOUS Report (and they
will!):
•
•
•
•
•
•
Ask them why they need it?
Who will read it?
How is it going to be used?
What EXACTLY do they need each column?
How often is this report likely to be used?
What decision will be make with the data?
Things to Consider When
Creating a Report
• Will all columns of data fit on one page?
• Does it contain data that will cause duplicate rows?
– IP Address
– Hard Drives
– CPU
• Does it have too many Columns?
• Is this a one off Report?
• Is the report “doable”
• You are the Technical Expert!
KISS
• Keep it simple & stupid
• One table per report
• Don’t for get about Charts!
• No more that 8 columns
SSRS Tools
• Report Builder 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0
• SQL Server Business Intelligence
Development Studio 2005 & 2008
• Which do I use?
